I love it when something is not explicitly horror by any means but just throws in something terrifying. I think that sometimes makes for something far scarier and more impactful. Zelda games used to be pretty good at this. Dead Hand, Elegy of Emptiness statue, Blizzeta. All great examples

I think it comes from this idea that they believe they will influence the story since it is still ongoing. Like the belief that if you drum up enough noise you'll make changes happen. Add on the fact that fans have direct access to the creators and well.
