Why scientists are nervous about fungi They can pose a threat to human health — yeast infections are but one example. Scientists say not enough attention is paid to their ability to develop resistance to medications that treat them.

"For fungi, because they're similar to human cells, it's quite difficult to find a drug which kills the fungus but does not harm the human cell. So in the past 75 years, we have developed only five classes of antifungals."

Not a lot of #COVID19 vaccination is going on in Australia. Especially alarming when it's low in the older groups at risk of the most severe outcomes.

This is figure 1, which shows Long COVID Disease Burden vs. Other Conditions, by Sex Predominance.

A study in Communications Medicine finds that Long COVID’s disability burden rivals that of Alzheimer’s and asthma in the US, but Long COVID receives 14% of its years lived with disability-proportionate funding from the National Institutes of Health. go.nature.com/4v23Nzv #medsky 🧪

For those that don't know (included me!), Gremubamab binds specifically to the Pseudomonas aeruginosa PcrV protein and the Psl exopolysaccharide.

Both are virulence factors used for adhesion and biofilm stability.

This is Achrioptera manga, a giant phasmid or stick insect native to Madagascar.

The specific epithet, "manga" means blue in Malagasy & it's not hard to see why. Only males are blue.

The tiny back wings ("alae") are an example of brachyptery: they're useless for flight, but have other functions.

Long COVID is significantly underreported across the globe - The Sick Times Long COVID, which has affected more than 400 million people around the world, is often underreported, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

“We are not treating [Long COVID] with as much seriousness as we should be treating it. And when that doesn’t happen, then people don’t open up.”

New feature by Jamie Ducharme about #LongCOVID's unreported toll across the globe.
