Coming home from work is one of the most miserable parts of the day (at least in my opinion, from when I commuted) so I think any nice surprise at that time of the day stands out even more (though any unpleasant surprise is also somehow so much worse)

Somnium Files for $5, Nonary Games for $6, Shiren 5 for $4, and Zanki Zero for $6 is a pretty killer way to spend ~twenty bucks

The more obvious Sega similarities have been mentioned but somehow there's a throughline connecting Shenmue and Splatoon that I can't quite put my finger on. It's like the appreciation for small things in the world around you even if they don't really matter that much, and a sense of place.
