Trust me, disabled people feel this hostility acutely.

Got student evals today and, fear not, I immediately located three negative comments in a sea of positivity. I have welcomed those three comments into my head. I have charged them no rent.

I have not been since 2023 but I am ON MY WAY to #asecs2026 as we speak. I will TRY not to tackle anyone in a fit of enthusiastic greeting, but I make no promises.

even setting aside the intended effect of campus crackdowns: one difference between now and two years ago is that half or so of them are gone, having received their four year degrees, and "students" (2026) and "students" (2024) refer to two largely different populations of people

I've always said this kind of weather is why March pisces are Like This, but this year is so demented I'm starting to think it's actually reversed: the weather is the inner turmoil of thousands of March pisces made manifest

Federal Courts Are Putting Trans People In Danger The Supreme Court’s decision in Skrmetti is already leading to devastating consequences in the lower courts.

more folks should know about this BS:

A federal appeals court said West Virginia’s policy denying Medicaid coverage to people seeking surgical treatment for gender dysphoria is *not discriminatory* bc it bans trans-specific healthcare for cis & trans people alike

So, uh. In disability studies we call this a "disability dongle" or a techno-utopian solution to a problem that appeals to the able-bodied imagination rather than the actuality of disabled life itself.

Deploying a LLM to translate a legal notice for an asylum seeker functions similarly.

NBC News poll

Voters hold negative views of Al. In fact, the only topics less popular in the survey were the Democratic Party and Iran.

Oh good gravy. Burke had thoughts on a lot of things, and they were mostly, at the end of the day, about boobs. Signed, an actual eighteenth-century scholar.

This is a basic and crucial point for any discussion of LLMs’ use in teaching research or writing. Whether it can ape us, fool us, or get facts right or wrong is, in the end, irrelevant. The LLM is not the thinker we are trying to encourage; the LLM is not the writer that we are trying to improve.

If one blames the Jew for not having been ennobled by oppression, one is not indicting the single figure of the Jew but the entire human race, and one is also making a quite breathtaking claim for oneself. I know that my own oppression did not ennoble me, not even when I thought of myself as a practicing Christian. I also know that if today I refuse to hate Jews, or anybody else, it is because I know how it feels to be hated. I learned this from Christians, and I ceased to practice what the Christians practiced.

I think often of this one Baldwin paragraph, not specifically because of Jewish contexts but because of the assumptions that are often made about what oppression does to anyone

Also, neither panic can establish that these populations are disproportionately likely to be trans. Lots of trans people present relatively normatively before coming out. Many transmascs I know (including me!) presented as mousy uncomfortable girls for many years.

She’d Never Changed Her Gender Marker. Kansas Invalidated Her License Anyway. — Assigned A trans Kansas resident recently changed her name but not her gender marker on her license, fearing what Kansas may do if she did. The Kansas DMV still flagged her ID.

This story, from @natezuke.bsky.social, is absolutely wild. A trans woman who never changed her gender marker was issued a letter invalidating her license. At the DMV they cut up her license, which had an "M" marker.

IVIG (Intravenous Immunoglobulin) saved my son's life & kept this man's cancer in remission for 20yrs. For those unfamiliar, treatment involves transfusion of part of the blood donations of strangers--the part with the antibodies created by their immune systems--to reset recipients' immune response.

I've been getting IVIG every 4 weeks for over a decade to treat a primary immune deficiency. My first year of college I had 5 sinus infections and one bout of pneumonia. In the last 6 years I have had 3 sinus infections. Truly amazing.

I don't think the "Einstein" or other AI replacing the important steps of learning, esp in higher ed, would be posing quite the challenge it is right now if students hadn't been sent the message their entire lives that the point of college is to get good grades and a high paying job, not to learn.
