Find something you really like and set aside a particular 10 minutes a day to read! It took me about two years to get back into the habit and to look forward to reading as my end-of-day reward, but I actually have mostly fixed my attention span. I can sit and read without effort for a while now

The navigation plane says "no" to my search for "renarration"

The navigation plane says "no" to my search for "renarration"

Word is so glitchy that when I try a keyword search in a doc and no terms come up, it just says "no."

This Is America, Just Not the America You Knew Two white people were killed by ICE in Minneapolis and suddenly White America is outraged.

America is outraged after ICE killed two white people in Minneapolis.

I understand why folks are feeling afraid and angry right now. But I need you to understand something just as clearly: this is what Black America has been living with for generations.

Ugh, devastating. Thanks for your work, Shannon -- I have my students read the first chapter of The AI Mirror and it really opens their eyes

I haven't, but I've listened to some of Doctorow's lectures and podcast episodes! Also, are you going to ECA again this year?

My husband had a Christmas-Carol-esque dream that we had the CEO of Google in a room. Carlo gave him a dressing down for allowing Google phones and other products to enshittify so badly. Sundar Pichai looked thoroughly chagrined. Who knew it was so easy to hold tech billionaires accountable?

A good idea-- he was only 2, though

My husband: my sister's kid broke their TV. They got an opportunity now.
Me: to watch less TV?
Him: to upgrade to a bigger one.

Damn, I tried.

Had a very vivid dream last night that I was back in undergrad and my friends want to go drive somewhere. They showed up and Zohran was in the car and we were all laughing and joking and having the best time 😂😅

Yes. Relatedly, I'm tired of 16 to 25-year-old main characters. Give me stories by and about middle-aged women who do amazing things

iPhone Pocket: Exactly Why The Issey Miyake Collaboration Sold Out Super-Fast The newest Apple release is the iPhone Pocket. Did you buy it? If not, you may be too late.

The latest in Apple nonsense. My favorite part: “Inspired by the concept of ‘a piece of cloth,’" inexplicably in quotation marks. www.forbes.com/sites/davidp...

I asked my COMM 101 students where they get their news. Most said social media; one said, "honestly, this class." We profs have such an obligation to gather the best info and succinctly and clearly convey it in only 150 minutes per week. A big responsibility I take seriously

The Case Against Generative AI (Part 1)

For sure-- and here's the podcast if you don't want to invest like an hour in reading it, which I perhaps inadvisably did! open.spotify.com/episode/2vLB...

One of my particularly brilliant students had made a comment in our Perusall discussions about life outside of media and I linked her to an article about Thoreau. She read it and quoted it back to me during the midterm, sharing her thoughts about the importance of life without screens. Incredible

I'm holding oral midterms for my COMM 101 Intro to Media Industries students this week and they're blowing me away. I'm centering the course around "AI" literacy, critical media, and cultural studies, and they're really getting it. They're engaging, passionate, curious

For sure. I recently stumbled across Zitron's attempts to account for where the money is. I don't know much about him but his sourcing seems legitimate: www.wheresyoured.at/the-case-aga.... Also, he has a podcast in case you don't want to read this; it's crazy long

True. And many experts are pointing to the fact that AI influence might not be as major as it's currently pitched to be!
