On Jan 13, MPs discussed the merits of a legal #DutyofCare in UK Higher Education in a Westminster Hall debate attended by LEARN and our friends @forthe100.bsky.social. Most MPs were firmly in support - disappointingly the Government is still treading a weary old line on 'unintended consequences'.
Yesterday MPs debated the need for a #StatutorydutyofCare in UK #HE. Here's our joint response with our @forthe100.bsky.social friends to the debate: www.thelearnnetwork.org.uk/post/mps-cal...
An investigation into behaviour of universities is unavoidable
MPs will now debate whether universities should be subject to statutory duty of care
Cue guilty Vice Chancellors insisting that such protection is unneeded😉

Student suicides are widely reported — rightly so, or nothing would change
University staff also die by suicide, often due to bullying or excessive workload
Institutions usually hush this up
Reliable statistics are needed amid today’s university stresses

Zero tolerance to bullying & harassment in universities should mean zero victims — not 25%
Instead, it’s complainants & whistleblowers who face zero tolerance ... while bullies & harassers face zero consequences
🔥 The Question We Can’t Ignore
Would we accept this level of loss in schools?
Would we accept it in the workplace?
So why do we accept it in universities?
Students deserve safety and protection — not platitudes.

New study shows stark gaps between student groups at risk of suicide
The new data from the ONS did not, however, look at why there were such discrepancies between demographics when it comes to student suicide

I’ve been reading through the Lost Voices stories on @forthe100.bsky.social which remember university students lost to suicide.
This is a must read.
So many opportunities missed and so many people and systems failed Theo. Things can and should be better.

Help bring accountability to those who run universities
Way back in 2012 I had a breakdown while working at Cardiff University; therapy provided by the Staff Counselling service helped greatly in my recovery. A few years later the Management scrapped the Counselling service. That's probably the reason for the poor scores on mental health support.
CTRL+ALT+DEL+UNIVERSITY will run for 3 months

First look shows bullying, excessive workload & support for mental health as major concerns
