Vikings on Mars? More likely than you think!
Recently recovered Viking wood reveals a newly found 1550 spike and confirms that the Vikings were the first Europeans to settle on Mars, nearly 400 years before the moon landing. #AprilFools

It is exciting to see, and we can't wait to contribute further to the advancement of this technique! ⭐ (6/6)

Fig. 4 | The probability of occurrence of various levels of additional 14C production (Q) related to a potential spike, based on the seven datasets from 1 to 970 CE. From top to bottom, each panel corresponds to a Q threshold ranging from 1 to 3.5 atom cm−2 s−1 yr−1. Years with a probability greater than 40% are indicated.

But our PhD Student Jian Wangs recent paper shows that a couple of new spikes may exist in the late 1st millennium CE – although these may still be too small to be used for exact dating. (5/6)

Recent research at our laboratory in Groningen has returned both encouraging and discouraging news on this front
PhD Student @pinserdil.bsky.social has cast doubt on previous claims that distinct spikes are evident in the mid-2nd millennium BCE (doi.org/10.1017/RDC....) (4/6)

🌲 continually absorb radiocarbon from the atmosphere. So when a sudden rise in radiocarbon concentration occurs, we can observe this from one tree ring to the next. This is what we call ‘spikes’ or a ‘Miyake Event’ (3/6)

However, exact year dating is dependent on the discovery of new radiocarbon ‘spikes’. These spikes are sudden increases in radiocarbon concentration in the atmosphere. We can locate them in certain years from the past in trees🌲(2/6)

Evidence for European presence in the Americas in ad 1021 Nature - Precise dating of wooden artefacts at a Norse settlement in Newfoundland establishes that the Norse were in the Americas in ad 1021.

We aim to advance the new field of exact-year radiocarbon dating 📈⭐
It was exactly this method that allowed researchers at Groningen to show that the Norse were present in the Americas in the year 1021 CE (rdcu.be/faqmG) (1/6)

Resolving challenges in the development of a protocol for δ18O determinations on tree-ring cellulose Tree rings can provide annual records of environmental and climatic conditions. These records can be obtained through the physical characteristics of tree rings or the isotopic composition of their...

In our project's first publication, we describe some of the difficulties associated with oxygen-18 analysis 🔬 with pyrolysis-IRMS and explore the use of multiple organic reference materials to calibrate the results. (5/6)

While it is a powerful technique, getting the cellulose extraction and measurement protocol right can be quite a challenge. (4/6)

One of the most exciting proxies is the oxygen-18 composition of tree-ring cellulose, which offers many advantages over tree-ring width measurements, which are most often associated with dendrochronology. (3/6)

Through the use of a number of proxies (ring widths, isotope ratios, etc. 📊 ), long composites of tree-ring data have been used to study past climates and ecosystems, as well as precisely date 📅 wooden structures or objects. (2/6)
