I legitimately feel this book could have been 3.5 or more stars out of 5 if either it was marketed as YA or as something other than comparisons to Circe or Priory of the Orange Tree, and if it had just 1 round of blind reader reviews before final editing. I can’t forgive it being over 50% dialogue
This was for Year of the Mer, which had great concepts but just fell apart in so many ways. I desperately wanted to enjoy it because I love vengeance tales, but I was bored for half the book and then it got worse. I finished it because I am stubborn and because it has faint flashes of what could be
I was not familiar with this but it suits
I don’t believe that authors or any artist should go out of their way to pander to the audience but this book definitely needed a few test readers because it feels unedited and like it earned it’s genre based purely on the level of gore rather than maturity of content
I don’t wanna become one of those online people who just dunk on a book willy nilly but like. Wow. Wow. Some books are bad. Sometimes it’s part of how the marketing sets up expectations, and other times it’s because of a character or a twist, and once in a great while it’s all these things and more

This series is so unserious except when it is, so the more subtle humour and references feel like the reader is also in the room with the crawlers just trying to hold on and figure out how not to become another statistic in the alien invasion apocalypse Survivor marathon
I think the reason the humour works so well in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series is it’s usually super over the top like everything else but once in a while there will be a subtle reference or in joke that real people would do or say, adding to the immersiveness of the whole thing
