Genuinely the worst thing about having a PhD in a music-related field is all of the men who think they know more than you do about the thing you spent the better part of a decade becoming an expert on because they own a lot of CDs

if you're trying to do something that synthesizes from a lot of different angles, there's much less space for that. it's all about fitting into existing fandom or subcommunity expectation. a kind of extension of what internet communities have always been about, in my book. i don't think it's good!

the most underrated bad thing about our current era culturally i don't really see other people talking about is that a lot niche communities treat insularity and conformity to their own very specific set of values as an extreme virtue and are deeply suspicious/unfamiliar with anything outside that.

i talk about in my recent article that personality disorders are what i call “incongruent vulnerabilities.” the deeply vulnerable parts of ourselves make us incongruent with the social world. our wounds disorient us from the dominant agencies of the world and even from how agency is conceived. but your vulnerability, your body, your feelings tell a story. the vulnerability of everything you have been through, all that you have experienced, all the things u have borne and carried, all the things u witnessed in the world, in others, and in yourself, it is how you as a living being existed in dialogue, through the vulnerability of your bodymind, with a world overflowing with the signs of violence and domination.

ur feelings and being matters and is valued simply because it tells the story of your vulnerable experiences, how it reflects a belief in life when faced with power. u developed borderline out of a belief in life within situations when the world wanted your life gone. so now it may feel like your belief in life is gone but center yourself to what ur feelings are telling u, that your trauma affected u in ways that were untenable and the untenable nature of that experience shows a belief in your life.

i wrote this to my friend who experiences intense suicidality. it bears repeating to all traumatized people who currently feel hopeless and worthless.

“Once, when WAP (Women Against Pornography) was leading its tours through the area in the early eighties, I did an informal tabulation of six random commercial porn films in the Forty-second Street area and six random legit movies playing around the corner in the same area during the same week. I counted the number of major female characters portrayed as having a profession in each: the six legit films racked up seven (one had three, one had zero). The six porn films racked up eleven. On the same films I took tabs on how many friendships between women were represented, lesbian or otherwise, in the plot. The six legit films came out with zero; the six porn films came out with nine. Also: How many of each ended up with the women getting what they wanted? Five for the porn. Two for the legit”

life is too hard, too heartbreaking, too cruel, not to have radical compassion and humanity for people. life is too vulnerable and too frequently forsaken to not cherish and have unflagging belief in life.
