Simpler: Deep Cuts is good, but you need to prioritize your base game knowledge to make sense of what deep cuts is offering.

Deep Cuts' threat roll changes the core operation (according to people I trust, it improves the game meaningfully). However, it's presented from the perspective that you're already familiar with the base game system. I think it'd be difficult to learn from deep cuts from the outset.
