Other backflip idea is sniper getting stuck in the past. he probably can't hide very well how much he knows spy(/everyone else). Being driven insane by keeping MORE to himself which should've been fine. Meanwhile spy is paranoid about how much this guy knows him in very small, inconsequential ways.
The flip idea is older spy gets stuck in the past and just suffers just as much. (Same premise, but idk I think it's much more suffering to relive everything knowing all the details of how things went ... being unable to return to the person you were (someone who isnt in love, or has love).

My secret sequel idea is younger spy returning back to his time and spends the rest of his miserable life trying to casually reenact how he and sniper might/would/should get together and sends so many mixed signals to sniper. it's still slowburn but one wick is running out faster than the other.
