Car ownership isn’t universal in Scotland.

• 1 in 4 people have no access to a car
• 66% in low-income households

Yet parking policy often assumes universal car ownership.

Our new report explores what that means for fairness in our streets.

Most rail upgrades treat cycling as an afterthought. Harderwijk didn't.

A level crossing replaced by an underpass. Cycling designed in from the start, not bolted on later.

Infrastructure that connects people instead of cutting them off.

I'm fed up of seeing drivers texting or reading from a phone ***while driving*** (and it's also unacceptable if you're stopped in traffic). If you are driving, it's very simple: you are in charge of a 1+ ton killing machine, so don't touch your phone. Ever. No, not even "insert excuse here".

Love this.

"There's all these new paths and it's making Hawick a better place." 🚲🚶🏼‍♀️

"They've opened up more places... Me and my sisters have started to cycle more. We all had bikes sitting in the shed. Since the paths are here, we've reason to use them and it's made us much more active."

Not to be all show-offy but this is the one I've got on the shelf. The whole W&N Fiction range is pretty classy.

Hannah smiles as she fixes her son into his child seat on her new bike.

Working mum and teaching assistant Hannah, has seen her mornings transformed by having access to a bike - saving time and money along the way.

“My son loves the journeys to work: when he sees his helmet he goes ‘bike!’. He loves looking at his surroundings on the way, ringing the bell as we go.”

1.2 million people displaced in Lebanon due to Israel's attacks. That's nearly twice the population of Glasgow.

It's obscene.

Yep, pretty familiar with Carl Sagan (& the famous Pale Blue Dot image). I don't remember a photo conveying the fragility of the atmosphere as effectively as this though, specifically. Quite a valuable image for everyone to have to hand.

Star Trek First Contact scene, and if you haven't watched this one you should cancel all plans and view immejietly. (Also has a Mark S from Severance cameo) Ok, it's nighttime and we're close in on 2 dudes, closest is Zefram Cochrane, and just behind him is William T. Riker, famous tromboner. Both are in civilian clothes, Riker a leather jacket, and Zefram in a bomber type coat with the white fluffy wooly stuffing around the collar. Zefram is also wearing a weird black hat that is sort of like a bandana in form and function, but instead of fabric it's bedazzled leather. He's speaking, and looks kind of dumbfounded or stumped. Closed caption reads, "You're all....astronauts .. on some kind of Star Trek"

I don't remember seeing an image of Earth before that captures the (thin, fragile, tiny layer of) atmosphere so clearly. I mean, look at that.

Same street and same buildings, but removing car parking gave it back to the people who live there.

Material World: A Substantial Story of Our Past and Future

Been thinking a lot about one of the best books I've read in recent years - @edconway.bsky.social's Material World. Raw materials, the science behind their use, supply chain bottlenecks, and related challenges past and current.

Just discovered it's on audiobook on Spotify, and well worth a look.

I was so, so happy to hear about this last year and it's brilliant that construction's finally happening. So much happening in Govan just now!

Together with Dumbarton Castle, there's potential for a genuinely significant international visitor attraction if they're paired up.

It's fantastic to learn that the extension to Govan Old is already under construction. This will really improve the visitor experience and improve access to the Govan Stones.

The whole Iran war is looking more and more like a gimmick to drop energy sanctions on Russia and pressure Europeans to do the same. A war to make Russia’s much larger war easier and possible to sustain.

Parking charge plan: 'It's like the wild west at the moment' Proposals for new parking zones in Glasgow are controversial but some residents say they would tackle the current chaotic situation.

The other side got a look in on the news!

"I'm constantly being forced onto the road or crossing in between parked cars where they shouldn't be and where you've not got visibility of the traffic."
