Jane Goodall (1934-2025) has died at 91. 🌿

She redefined science by showing chimps use tools, feel emotions & live complex lives and spent her life fighting for nature.

Her voice for the wild will never fade.

What's the difference between
a cat and a comma?

One has its claws
at the end
of its paws,
and one is a pause
at the end of a clause.

Medieval “drugstores” started in monasteries, moved to city shops, and were strictly regulated: doctors prescribed, apothecaries prepared (1231, 1353 rules).

Remedies mixed plants, spices, minerals, even oddities - laying groundwork for modern pharmacy.

A library heals with stories, soothing restless thought.
Its shelves prescribe wisdom that can’t be bought.
Each book a remedy, gentle or bold,
A hospital for the mind, where spirits unfold.

I’m proposing a bookshop cafe.
Not just a bookshop where you
can sit for coffee, but a bookshop
where you walk in and say things
like “I’d like a latte and a book with
dragons and no romance, please”
and the barista would serve your
coffee and pull out the perfect book
for you!

Where do we go to make this a thing? #Booksky

I opened my book
I turned to my page
and tumbled right in
was gone for an age
I lift up my head
and see to my shame
another day passed
I’ve done it again
I’ve sat for a moment
a quick read that’s all
but hours have flown by
whilst I was enthralled
I’d had plans today
done nothing at again
there’s always tomorrow
I’ll tidy up then.

A 1,600-year-old mosaic at Huqoq, Israel, shows Jonah swallowed by three fish, plus scenes like the Tower of Babel with Greco - Roman motifs.

First Jonah mosaic found in a synagogue, rewriting views of Jewish art.

“That was when they suspended the Constitution. They said it would be temporary. There wasn't even any rioting in the streets. People stayed home at night, watching television, looking for some direction. There wasn't even an enemy you could put your finger on.”~ Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale

#WordNerd: The word malaria comes from Italian mala aria — “bad air.”
People once thought swampy air made you sick.
They weren’t totally wrong… the swamps just happened to be full of mosquitoes. #Booksky #Language

It’s funny that we think of libraries
as quiet demure places where we are
shushed by dusty, bun-topped
bespectacled women.

The truth is libraries are raucous
clubhouses for free speech,
controversy and community.

Librarians have stood up for
freedoms, sat down and read with
toddlers, and reached out to
illiterate adults.

Librarians cannot be shushed

True strength is the ability
to pick up a really big book,
say an 800-page hardback, lift
it up, carry it across the room
open the cover...

and read a single chapter. #Booksky

Every book you have read
every story you’ve heard
is just twenty six letters
It’s true, every word.

Yes those twenty six letters
From A through to Z
Make up every word
That you’ve ever read

Because how can there ever be enough? Books are worlds, escapes, lifelines - and you don’t just stop collecting lifelines. 📚😼

Kummerspeck (German, literally “grief bacon”)
The extra weight you put on from emotional overeating — sadness, stress, heartbreak… all measured in slices of cake and late-night snacks.

It doesn’t mean actual bacon, but it perfectly captures that feeling when comfort food becomes a coping strategy.

So next time you reach for the ice cream after a bad day, just call it Kummerspeck — it sounds way more sophisticated than “stress eating.”

Tmesis (pronounced T-MEE-sis)
The splitting of a word or phrase by dropping another word right in the middle — often for emphasis.

Examples:
👉 “I haven’t seen her any-blooming-where.”
👉 “Abso-f*cking-lutely, baby.”

It shows up most in informal speech, but it’s been around since Ancient Greek and Latin poetry. A fancy name for something we all do when we’re feeling extra dramatic.

✨ #IDIOMFACTS ✨

Did you know that “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps”
 originally meant doing something impossible?

The phrase began life as an adynaton —
a type of figure of speech for an absurd or impossible task
(like “when pigs fly”). After all, you can’t literally lift
yourself off the ground by tugging on your own boots!

Over time, though, the idiom flipped its meaning.
Instead of mocking impossibility, it became a metaphor
for achieving success through one’s own effort —
especially in American English.

So next time you hear someone tell you to
“pull yourself up by your bootstraps,” and you can’t
it’s because you’re being asked to do something impossible!

A penny
for your thoughts, she said
My dear
you’ll need much more
The imaginings
that fly around my head
are myriad
For I am a reader, a writer
a dreamer
and my mind is filled with tales
more valuable than gold
But here
sit beside me, for I have
a tale
begging to be told
