I have been asked to shut it down after phishing reports happen day after day (I block everything as soon as I'm aware). I don't have easy solutions to curb the number of abuse reports, I was already turning off the service at night and the abusers keep sending around non-working links.

So:
1) Phishers are stupid for giving out links that don't work
2) "Security companies" don't check if links are valid
3) Hosting providers don't check if links are valid
4) Gateway operator blocks links before they were valid

Good shit-show. We need working phish-detection in gateways in any case.

What's funny, they complain about some URLs that were never delivered successfully to anyone, based on reports on Phishtank, a service that actively misclassifies blocked URLs as active, and which offers APIs that are broken or highly rate-limited.

Scaleway finally asked me to stop hosting an IPFS gateway in their infra. I have blocked everything I could, as fast as I could. Even with the service operating a few hours a day the phishing campaigns persisted.

Running a public IPFS gateway is a pain.

Lots of phishing reports sent to domain provider, hosting provider and domain owner. In fact, there are sites that incentivize finding and reporting phishing for rewards. Makes me wonder if all the urls are actually real.

Rainbow is our new IPFS HTTP gateway binary. It is optimized to be a gateway and only that. Lots of hacking ongoing and very alpha: github.com/ipfs/rainbow
