Ex Partum is a dystopian novella reminiscent of The Giver while exploring parental anxieties and exhaustion, invasion of privacy, sacrifice for choice, unlearning and relearning, corporate greed, and over-confidence and reliance on tech. burnett delivers a heartrending story that illuminates the flaws of every society as well as ourselves. —Ai Jiang, author of Linghun and A Palace Near the Wind; image shows surreal depiction of a repetitive interior. Ex Partum by emma burnett, sci-fi novella, coming June 2026, Atthis Arts, Detroit Michigan

Oh my gosh, that one! Grinding my teeth all along LOL. Great example of how you can love a story when the only thing you want to do is throwing shoes at the character (murderous shoes preferably). Masterclass in how to have a despicable chsracter and still hook your readers!

Those of us who survived the breach were put in chains and dragged over to their cruiser. They ripped out the harpoons, boosted away, and torpedoed the company craft into untraceable shrapnel from a safe distance.

Most people would have seen this as a setback, but me? I saw it for what it was: a paradigm shift.

I have a new sci-fi story published in @translunartl.bsky.social today! This one’s slightly painful to read, as it’s told in the style of an unhinged motivational LinkedIn post.

It’s not my hearing; he says he wants me to come all the way out west to the Heinlein Space Center to take a look at something. I remind him politely that I’m an ornithologist, not an engineer.

"Take Flight" by @danpeacock.bsky.social brings some powerful eco fiction about birds and fathers and sons.

This is a really good story about the struggle between wanting to save something that might be dying and escaping in order to save yourself.

This set of observations is produced by my scrolling Reddit and otherwise listening to people talk about "how to write."

A) there is no requirement that any of your characters has any sort of "arc" let alone a redemption.

B) there is also no requirement that your fiction has a plot.
