Painted in 1884 by Sargent, Portrait of Madame X became one of his most infamous portraits. A fallen shoulder strap sparked scandal; critics saw sexual innuendo. Sargent repainted it, placing the strap back over her shoulder, but the image endured. Madame X doesn’t invite the gaze. She owns it.

JOHN SINGER SARGENT is notably known for his Glided Age society portraits, especially Madame X and the scandal that accompanied it. But his secret artwork reveals another side of him and his work. These works were kept within his personal circle & not intended for public view.
