A collective photo taken at Firestorm Books. Our team, including five humans and two dogs, is sitting on the sidewalk in front of the building looking relaxed. The sky is bright but cloudy and flags on the building hang without any indication of wind. The building is painted forest green and various posters and signs are visible in the windows, which reflect the sky. The largest reads "Immigrants Welcome."

Like a lot of small businesses in our region, Firestorm has been in financial distress for the last year. Hurricane Helene was our tipping point, but local cost of living increases, inflation, and higher occupancy costs are huge contributors. 1/9

Photograph of a small pile of mixed U.S. coins, including pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.

In 2025, the U.S. stopped minting pennies — it was costing 3.7 cents to make each 1-cent coin.

But minting nickels represent an even bigger loss. It costs 13.78 cents to make one 5-cent coin. That's a $17.7 million loss every year!

Maybe it's time to rethink how coins are minted/used in the U.S.

As soon as there's an iOS/iPhone version of that app (or something that does the same thing), I will download it!

Any ETA for the iOS port, @yjeanrenaud.bsky.social ?

Screen capture of a Paramount+ ad as it displayed on an iPhone on March 7, 2026. No text is visible on this ad when it is viewed in Dark Mode.

Note that the inset photo of the phone's owner (in the upper right corner of the screen capture) has been intentionally blurred.

Hey @paramountplus.com ... maybe in the future design your ads so that they work for the over 80% of people who use Dark Mode on their phones.

I vote for a vintage encyclopedia set. A vintage set offers a starting point for information on a topic, plus illustrates what we knew (and didn't know) at a specific point in time.

On a related note, some of my favorite space exploration books were written between 1950 and 1980.

Plus (surprise!) the 2026 race is partially funded by a billionaire.

What to know: Downtown Anchorage braces for a canine takeover as the Iditarod’s 54th run begins The Iditarod returns to Anchorage as hundreds of dogs and their mushers line up for the race’s ceremonial start.

Why does the Iditarod Trail Dog Race still exist?
Since the annual event began in 1973, more than 150 dogs have died during the race. In 2024 alone, 3 young dogs collapsed and died on the trail, while 200+ others were pulled from the race due to exhaustion, illness, or injury.

An ethically-challenge doofus ("ethically-challenged" based on the fact that he created a web app in college to rate the f*ckablity of his female classmates) is shown wearing Ray-Ban/Meta Pervert Glasses.
Note that this same doofus also recently was chastised by a judge while wearing the Pervert Glasses in a courtroom to identify potential jurors in a lawsuit against his company.

Meta doesn't care if their new Ray-Ban/Meta Pervert Glasses are being misused for numerous gross invasions of personal privacy:

I strongly support the use of the "pervert glasses" terminology for Zuckerberg's latest privacy-violation devices.

Those who know me IRL know how I’ve ranted about my opinion that NASA needs to modify/replace the Artemis program. My complaints mainly center on safety and cost issues.

Now (at least to some degree) it sounds like officials at NASA are thinking the same way.

The Milwaukee police officer in question allegedly used Flock to track his dating partner and the partner’s ex.

For some reason, the Milwaukee police chief doesn’t see this as indicative of how easily the Flock surveillance system can be misused/abused.

Vance says administration is pausing some Medicaid funding to Minnesota because of fraud concerns Vance announced Wednesday that the Trump administration would "temporarily halt" some Medicaid funding to the state of Minnesota over fraud concerns.

To fight fraud (or so they claim) the US Gov is “halting” a large portion of Medicaid payments to Minnesota, PLUS announced a 6-month national moratorium blocking all new enrollments for durable medical equipment.

The level at which this admin hates its citizens is beyond unbelievable.

I miss NASA’s MMU (Manned Maneuvering Unit). The tech was only used a few times and (from what I recall) NASA concluded there were less expensive/easier ways to accomplish tasks for which the MMU was designed. (For example, use the Shuttle’s robotic arm.)

Dear Mr. McCarthy:
I am writing to you in your capacity as chairman of the Drake School Board. lam among those American writers whose books have been destroyed in the now famous furnace of your school. Certain members of your community have suggested that my work is evil. This is extraordinarily insulting to me. The news from Drake indicates to me that books and writers are very unreal to you people. 1 am writing this letter to let you know how real I am.
Iwant you to know, too, that my publisher and 1 have done absolutely nothing to exploit the disgusting news from Drake. We are not clapping each other on the back, crowing about all the books we will sell because of the news. We have declined to go on television, have written no
fiery letters to editorial pages, have granted no lengthy interviews. We are angered and sickened and saddened. And no copies of this letter have been sent to anybody else. You now hold the only copy in your hands. It is a strictly private letter from me to the
people of Drake, who have done so much to damage my reputation in the eyes of their children and then in the eyes of the world. Do you have the courage and ordinary decency to show this letter to the people, or will it, too, be consigned to the fires of your furnace?
gather from what 1 read in the papers and hear on television that you imagine me, and some other writers too, as being sort f ratlike people who enjoy making money from poisoning the minds of young people. I am in fact a large, strong person, fifty-one years old, who did a lot of farm work as a boy, who is good with tools. I have raised six children, three my own and three adopted. They have all turned out well. Two of them are farmers. I am a combat infantry veteran from World War ll, and hold a Purple Heart. 1 have earned whatever own by hard work. I have never been arrested or sued for anything. I am so much trusted with young people and by young people that I have served on the faculties of the Univ…

I was disappointed to read Cory Doctorow's post where he got weirdly defensive about his LLM use and started arguing with an imaginary foe.
