Forgetting you

1 month ago 97 23 0 0

That concludes the month of bird griffins!! Hope it helped introduce you to new birds 🫶 it was very fun painting them but also very upsetting to educate myself about some of them

Multiple institutions hold the last alive birds of the species (approx. 150 in captivity) and are trying to increase the population and eventually release them back to the island (though some of them have had problems with hybridization with mourning doves)

It was thought that the introduction of cats was the major factor in the species’ extinction, but after revision it was concluded that the island’s cats didn’t become feral until the 1970s, and now other hypothesis suggest human predation and habitat loss may have been the cause instead

Day 15, Socorro dove

Extinct in the wild

A formerly common bird in Socorro island, but it suddenly disappeared. Observations in 1957-1958 gave no indication that the population was declining, and the last sighting in the wild was in 1972.

Hi, I'm Irene aka illulinchi! :>
Nice to meet everyone!

It’s also vulnerable to climate change as the bushes it depends on have trouble re-growing during dry periods

Day 14, Blue-throated Hillstar

Critically endangered (80-110 mature individuals, decreasing)

This hummingbird wasn’t discovered until 2018. It lives in a small area in the páramos of southwestern Ecuador, where its habitat is being burnt for agriculture and further degraded by cattle grazing

The population has decreased by 80% in the past three generations (24 years) and it threatens genetic variability

Day 13, Regent honeyeater

Critically endangered (350-400 mature individuals, decreasing)

This Australian bird is affected by droughts and habitat loss. It's lost most of it (75%) to agricultural and residential expansion, and it’s suspected that more aggressive species have excluded it further

About 50% of mortality is due to bycatching, and thought to be the main cause of the species’ decline

Alongside that, its small breeding range (exclusively the Balearic islands, Spain) makes them vulnerable to introduced predators such as cats, rats, and genets

Day 12, Balearic shearwater

Critically endangered (19,000 mature individuals, decreasing)

The population declines at a rate of about 14% per year. This bird doesn’t begin breeding until 4-6 years of age and as such, adult mortality is its biggest threat

*Although at least 100 birds were released to the wild in 2018, the IUCN stipulates re-introduced individuals must have produced viable offspring in order to count as mature individuals. Hopefully new assessments will reveal the population has grown!

Day 11, Bali myna

Critically endangered (fewer than 50* mature individuals, decreasing)

Victim of illegal pouching for the cagebird trade since the 1990s. With the population critically low, genetic erosion, interspecific competition, natural predation, etc are some other threats the species faces
