This is The Washington Post using its opinion section to manufacture consent for U.S. intervention in Cuba. When every “opinion” piece points in the same direction, it stops being analysis and starts functioning as propaganda.

SPLC Union Logo: Yesterday, the Department of Justice leveled outrageous allegations at the Southern Poverty Law Center. In so doing, they maligned the integrity of the SPLC workers who have labored tirelessly for decades to expose the dangerous cruelty of extremists and hate groups in the United States.
SPLC Union Logo: This work is punishing. It takes a toll on our health and on our safety. But we persist because we believe in our mission to advance justice for all, and we believe that investigating, naming, and alerting the American people to the activities of those who seek to harm our neighbors is a moral imperative and an essential public service.
Today our colleagues are facing abuse and harassment from the far-right figures emboldened by this attack. But we will not be deterred, we will not be intimidated, and we will continue to name racism, sexism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, and all hate for the blight that it is.
Below is a statement from the unionized workers of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
I love when other white settler countries read America for the filth it is. Go get her with your bad self. Now tidy things up back home for folks of color too!
This is a really important point. It’s become clear that many of the conservative justices are as terminally Fox-brained as any garden variety red-hatted rube.
"Prisons are deathmaking institutions." — our cofounder @prisonculture.bsky.social.
Seems like the Strait of Hormuz is only open when the stock market is.
The number of people I have had stop in their tracks when I ask them that simple question of:
Is he “uncontrollably” angry when he smashes your things? Or does he magically never manage to smash *his own* or his boss’s things?
you are not a violent abuser BECAUSE you have mental health issues. You can be a violent abuser who is ALSO mentally ill. The mental illness is not the cause of your domestic violence.
Elite higher ed has many problems, but the key factor driving down trust is political. Look at the graph - backlash against costs, admissions, etc. can't explain the changes we see. We should still reform our institutions and refocus on our core mission, but blindly blaming ourselves is abuser logic
They're weak and getting weaker for sure but forgive me for not joining in the chorus saying this regime is cooked because another apocalyptic cut to federal funding for my sector just dropped and the kidnappings in my state have not slowed down (though it seems to have done so elsewhere)
So! Some newspaper media history.
The mainstream op-ed page is actually a somewhat recent journalism commercial product. NYT op-ed page started in 1970 . "Op-ed- meaning "opposite the editorial page".
The page often ran pieces that contradicted the paper's editorial stances.
WaPo journalists —virtually all white—covered the March on Washington.
A former Washington Post managing editor who was an intern at the time, WaPo published a dozen stories about the march — but ignored MLK's speech.
"We blew it" he wrote... IN AN OP-ED.

Literally the industry definition of success, that they loudly proclaim, is "we will destroy entire industries and make millions unemployable" and they wonder why so many hate that, and why a small subset might get violent about that?
So of course you have a combustible situation: An AI industry promising to eliminate jobs (or worse), a generation with withering opportunities, and an attack by ascendent oligarchy on an already barely-functioning democracy. What do you think is going to happen?
It's 2026 and the US is still trying to move away from the slaveholder electoral system.

when we pretend the issue with ICE is that they’re masked and untrained and ‘different’ from law enforcement, what you get is unmasked ICE in airports instead of any real change. latest:

conservative free speech is when they speak and you listen or suffer the consequences

“Federal effort to safeguard the results of the 2020 vote involved at least 75 people across several agencies. Today, nearly all of those people are gone, having resigned, been fired or been reassigned, particularly in the DOJ & DHS.” www.propublica.org/article/trum...
This is culturally really dangerous. Functioning societies depend on most people mostly following the rules even when they could probably get away with not doing so. That breaks down very fast once a critical mass decide that makes them saps and suckers.
NEW—I got an exclusive excerpt from a USAID whistleblower's new book that made me gasp multiple times. It details Trump's dismantling of the humanitarian aid agency & his team/DOGE's shocking ignorance to public health.
'Into the Wood Chipper' by Nicholas Enrich is out tomorrow. Read excerpt here:
Trump's Energy Secretary admits Trump knew his Iran war would raise prices:
"The president knew going into this that if you disrupt the flow of energy through [the Strait of Hormuz] in the short term, you're going to push up energy prices."
It's the 7th month of the US bombing random ships in Latin American waters they claim are drug smugglers (reminder that two survivors who were rescued were repatriated, not charged), and the death toll is 150+, and it barely gets discussed.
Thus, today's election is not really the end of an authoritarian regime. Rather, it is the first step in a much longer unwinding process.
It is massive and absolutely necessary first step — one that anyone who believes in democracy should celebrate. But it's more a beginning than an end.
I think it is clear that one aspect of the US mismanagement of the war and now the negotiations is simply racism.
They can't understand the way that they were outmaneuvered. And they can't accept it.
i firmly believe that kennedy wants preventable diseases to rip through american communities since, in his warped mind, those who survive without vaccines will have proven themselves “healthy.”
Vance’s actual position on the war is clear: Whatever helps me become president is what I believe in.
Kennedy canceled $500 million in mRNA research and announced no new mRNA projects will ever be initiated—killing the technology that produced the fastest vaccine rollout in human history.

NEW: After months of being too scared to leave their homes, more than 500 children have returned to in-person classes at Columbia Heights Public Schools, a huge moment of celebration for school leaders in this Minneapolis suburb once swarming with ICE agents. www.huffpost.com/entry/minnea...
