“A whole civilization will die tonight” is the most vile thing a US president has ever said, certainly during the post-1945 era when they’ve had the power to kill civilizations with the dropping of a bomb. I’m staring into the darkness. May this not be one of the most fateful days in human history.

I'm a bit of a broken record on this, but usurping the power of the purse isn't just one constitutional violation among all the many others. It is, uniquely and singularly, the death of constitutional government altogether. Game over, end of story, you now live in an autocracy.

it's hard not to keep coming back to the fact that they could simply have Not Done This

they could have not bombed Iran! the strait would be open! we wouldn't be staring down a massive global economic crisis! none of this had to happen!

Whenever I hear that someone is in stable condition I assume that they’re dead because that’s the most stable condition possible

Learned about a footgun running postgres on k8s. The postgres Dockerfile uses a VOLUME command which means it'll mount a local dir if nothing else is mounted there when run. In this case I got that local dir mounted under my PVC so on every restart the data went poof despite appearing persistent

Found a new use for @flox.dev today - was able to reproduce a bug involving communication between Ceph clients of two different versions. Before flox I probably would have set up 2 VMs with different versions of the packages installed but instead I was able to just run my tests from 2 flox envs

Not to get all John Henry here but I'm pretty sure I could make a sandwich way faster than that and actually put enough lettuce on it too

Redefining the Software Engineering Profession for AI | Communications of the ACM

Props to @scott.hanselman.com for naming the elephant in the room in big tech.

AI coding tools boost senior engineers but create challenges for juniors who lack context to judge outputs. Cutting junior hiring for near-term gains weakens the future pipeline. We’ll need apprenticeship-style paths.

Last time we won gold in men’s hockey we did it by beating a team from a corrupt failing authoritarian hegemon. This time, uh…

Sometimes I think how lucky we are that dogs are super cool AND can be trained not to shit in the house. Talk about hitting the jackpot

Tried to order the Grimace shake in the drive thru at McDonalds when they were trying out automated ordering. It kept asking if I meant chocolate or vanilla so I started saying “purple! I want purple!” until a human took over

I hadn't realized until now how little of the movie I can recall. It's just "somehow palpatine has returned" and then a blank void until suddenly there's horseback riding on a star destroyer.

You Are Here - Marc's Blog

The cost of turning written business logic into code has dropped to zero. At best, near-zero.

The cost of integrating services and libraries, the plumbing of the code world, has dropped to zero. At best, near-zero.

What does that mean for the future?

I assume that overnight now just means that they guarantee it won’t get there the same day. Gotta be at least one night in there.

Gotcha—let’s dig into that step by step.

1. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵, because I turned you into an amorphous lump of flesh. You’re not just immobile—you’re immortal, and you feel only anguish.

2. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺. That makes total sense—it’s a natural human impulse, and you’ve been through a lot.

If everyone just lets this go, that's the ballgame. Anytime they want to kill someone they'll just say the FBI is handling it.

Gave exe.dev a spin today. I used it to turn a pdf of a half-marathon training plan into a calendar view for tracking workouts between specific start and race dates, all while I was putting away Christmas decorations. I think I could get used to this
