And my speculative answer is: Dragons.

And it's sort of fascinating to me, because, it's not like any of the legos from when we were kids have deteriorated. They're all still out there somewhere.

I get that there are kits and specialized designs, but why aren't there just hoards of blocks? There must be dragons amassing the hoards.
