Longtime college friend of mine, Mike Prinke, was among those laid off at Epic Games: he has been fighting terminal brain cancer, and now he, his wife, and kid, have no income or health insurance.

Sharing here in hopes it can reach the right people on their behalf.

Tim is just one of the guys!

He is posting this like he’s some junior graphics programmer talking about his peers instead of the CEO who caused this pain directly by his own continued mismanagement.

Exactly this. It takes away all the intended personality, design, staging, lighting etc. from the characters, only to be replaced with what seems like an Instagram filter. Who is really the target audience here?

This is a very important quote from the interview that I hope every single company hoping to capitalize on the gaming industry reads and internalizes. Games are a unique market, and you can't just apply strategies from other industries and find success. This has been proven time and time again.

Screenshot of a CNN segment shared by Acyn. A split-screen shows commentator Lydia Moynihan on the left and Kevin O’Leary on the right during a heated exchange. The chyron reads, “Obama: Dems need to avoid scolding and ‘virtue-signaling.’” The post quotes O’Leary referencing China and concentration camps, and McGowan responding about West Virginia.

I spent my childhood inside of American concentration camps. I know one when I see one. And that is what ICE is building.

On the contrary. They will have to apply for those jobs, along with everyone else. If there's 2 producer openings elsewhere, and there's 5 producers laid off, you will have to go against your friends for the same position. It's very much as the title says and every bit as shitty. No one wants this

the faux-AI evangelists see the artistic process as a race to get to a finished product, instead of something valuable in itself. the process is where you develop those skills you don't have yet, it cannot be skipped, it is where the art happens

The odd ones I've seen for character art are exactly that - they need a 'senior' on a salary lower than a junior's to do the most tedious & soul destroying work we could do

That's a shame 😞 thank you though!

As someone else stated, if you think you'd enjoy it, why the hell not. It will increase your chances to make the shortlists, but if you don't have enthusiasm for the artstyle, they might think you won't be a good fit

A personal (realism) piece done well is just as valid, including good breakdowns helps to show you understand the workflow

Speaking from character side whos done hiring at studio✋
Depending on the role (but espc mid & up), we tend to look for people whose portfolio style roughly matches the project we're hiring for. Our shortlist (out of the 100s who apply) will have people who we think would be a good fit

Layoffs wreck studios. Institutional knowledge is SO valuable in the games industry. When you eventually replace that laid off employee, I don’t care if they’ve got 30 years of experience and dozens of games under their belt. They still have to learn the pipeline, the software, the systems.

Sad news today. Bithell Games, having been unable to secure a new larger scale project, is reducing in size. This means that eleven jobs are being made redundant. This constitutes the majority of our full-time staff.

It became clear leading up to the release of our most recent game that we were not immune to the challenges faced by many game development teams seeking funding partners in 2024 and 2025. We’ve fortunately been able to communicate these challenges ahead of time, and work with affected staff to ease departures as much as possible via severance packages.

It’s important to state that this was an incredible team of exceptionally talented people. If you’re a developer reading this, and you’re hiring; anyone among those affected would be a great addition to your studio, please reach out if we can help to put you in touch.

This news will not impact the availability of our existing self published games and ongoing support for them. We are incredibly grateful for our audience, and hope that your interest in our work follows individual team members as they head into other roles.

Bithell Games was always defined and elevated by our people. Today we
are less.

I am sure that laying off the most skilled people, with otherwise unobtainable insight from decades of experience in game production, will somehow make games cost less to develop and by extension purchase.
