Thanks to @pulsetoday.bsky.social and @emmajourno.bsky.social for writing about our new guidance for GPs on what to do when a child dies. We hope our guidance will be used by GPs up and down the country to help support bereaved parents. www.pulsetoday.co.uk/news/clinica... #bereavement #childdeath
Presented a webinar to Cheshire and Merseyside General Practice colleagues this lunchtime on our recently published document 'When a Child Dies - a Framework for General Practice'. Such an important area to get right.

If you are an #NHS #GeneralPractitioner, how equipped do you feel to manage the death of a child and support the bereaved parents? We have produced a Framework to help.
Please read and share!

I'm happy to talk to anyone about our new Framework including why and how we produced it. @pulsetoday.bsky.social @gponline.bsky.social @emmajourno.bsky.social @hsj.co.uk @bmj.com
We have recently published a new framework to support General Practice in the event of the death of a child. "When a Child Dies - a Framework for General Practice" is a practical guide for GPs in Cheshire and Merseyside, but applicable to all. www.cheshireandmerseyside.nhs.uk/latest/publi...

Thanks for sharing Chris
When a child dies – a Framework for General Practice. This will help GPs support bereaved parents, 'lean in' and be present. These are times where language matters. We can think about things we may not have considered. Thanks @drjongriffiths.bsky.social drjongriffiths.wordpress.com/2025/07/01/w...
Anecdotally most enquiries so far are from patients who are not eligible. I think the hard bit is not going to be whether there is a service for those eligible, rather how we talk to and manage those who are asking for it, but are not eligible? This would be the challenge even if services were live.
From my perspective the message to patients is: Are you eligible? If not, then we cannot prescribe. If so, then we will refer once service available.
I think there are things that, as GPs, we do know (in my area at least). We know what the eligibility criteria is and that there will be a service that will start this summer. We know we should not prescribe. Patient facing comms on ICB website and GP comms have gone out from ICB over 1 week ago.
🟣💚 Child Death Awareness Week (1–7 July)
We often shy away from the hardest conversations. But bereaved parents need us to listen, acknowledge, and show up.
I wrote about why this week matters and what we can all do:

Last week the @ncmd.bsky.social published my blog. I have drawn on my experience as a bereaved parent to write something that I hope is meaningful and helpful for people interacting with anyone who has lost a child. Please read and share. #childbereavement #childloss www.ncmd.info/blog/jonatha...
TW: child death
This is so beautifully written and I suspect many of us and our colleagues will benefit from reading it.

Thank you to the @NCMD_England for publishing my blog. This draws on my experience as a bereaved parent. How would you respond to someone telling you that one of their children has died? Check out my blog for some thoughts from me on this. #bereavement #grief
Thanks David, I would agree. Finding the right word for what to call our document is important and 'guidelines' might not be the right one.
Another good day at RCGP council. Meaningful debate on important topics. Differences of opinion but respectful discussions and important decisions.
Having a great time! Reading the latest Robert Crais ‘Cole and Pike’ novel!

Really pleased to have heard that my session proposal for the 2025 RCGP Annual Conference has been accepted. Will be sharing my experiences of being a bereaved parent. I think there is important learning for GPs here. #childloss #grief #childdeath #bereavement @rcgp.bsky.social
Thanks for replying. I agree, so important to be seen and known. I've just written a blog following on from a workshop based around 'scarred pots' which speaks to this. Take care. drjongriffiths.wordpress.com/2025/02/13/w...
@dr-shenanigans.bsky.social Hello, hope you don't mind me reaching out. I'm working on some guidelines for GPs around what to do when a child on your list dies. With you working in children's palliative care I thought you may have some thoughts on that. If so, let me know and we can discuss.
