From my review of the interface I suspect that this is photo-to-server round-trip.

Doing it locally from a video stream would be the ideal for a rapid response driver.

We live in a surveilled world because the marginal cost of doing surveillance is extremely low. The manual observations to build the database that is backing this application took the entire duration of Metro Surge to build.

One of the things worth noting is that OpenCV is, well, open.

ALPR is literally one of the basic demo apps for computer vision. License plates are designed to be easily detectable!

(Not to be dismissive of the Stancils’ tools. The backing database is the bit with real value.)

I go to the gym to lift heavy things and run in place and I’m happier for it.

Sisyphus really is just living his best life.

What we have confirmed here is that you have a soft spot for Heath Ledger.

There is a jet version of this aircraft that can takeoff and land in a driveway, with an optional pilot & gunner, a mounted gun, and interceptor drone launching capability.

Me, a musician: the imperfections are what make it art.

Woooow. The “in China” was all I needed to make that assumption, but no wonder he had such an easy time getting in.

Also worth mentioning: foreign visitors to the Forbidden Palace are basically a rounding error. From a management perspective one basically has to do zero capacity planning.

Given its size, a thousand bonus visitors per hour you wouldn’t even notice.

Yeah, that’s basically the entire group I learned with. I immigrated in 2019 and timing plus COVID left a hole.

I have spent the past hour looking for stories of pirates and have instead only found information about the police station which came much later.

Tai O 1820-1900 would be super interesting. (Tanka, British, pirates, war…)

They bailed to Tai O.

They bailed to Tai O.

I didn’t go looking for colonial history last I was there, but now I’m curious what exists in Tai O.

Shhh, no guidance for people in the US trying to recreate 戶口 from first principles.

Let them fail.

I’m a capable speaker now and I think it would be fun to grab a meal and chat on a regular basis with other Cantonese learners.

Hung Hom, Fortune Metropolis food court. Wednesday evening. 6pm-until, drop-in. Who’s in?

When I first moved to Hong Kong I used to attend a meetup for Cantonese learners hosted by the inimitable Alistair Tweed. Importantly, actually focused on learning and not a thinly-veiled singles mixer.

She hasn’t thought about it for more than 30 seconds; just repeating somebody’s talking point.

She proposes mainland schools opening in Hong Kong where we have: a 25% drop in P1 students in the last 6 years, the world’s lowest birth rate, and dozens of schools that will close in the next decade.

Setting aside the baseline cost of US$1000/year for a small three generational family in just expenses nobody is going to do this as a service provider because who is going to pay to become the IT administrator for their family!?

3 days ago 0 0 0 0

US$500 up front, annual paperwork requirements and costs, and $100/user/year for services.

And finally, the opportunity cost doing IT administration.

Doing a family device and account management setup basically requires going through the entire process of creating a “business.”

Need an LLC, IdP (Google Workspaces), and Apple Business, at a minimum.

Then, who knows which services work with the managed accounts as compared to personal accounts.

It gets worse! Hong Kong has a non-public, completely-unspecified, circa-1900 romanization system mostly used for proper nouns. It even distinguishes between sounds that no longer exist in Cantonese!

We of course don't use the one created by Sidney Lau _while on the government payroll_.

I’m not able to get an SFP from Netvigator. Might be able to clone theirs, but can’t get one from them.

There are still a couple of shops around town who put up their 年初四 signs and then just … never opened again.

On the optimistic side, there will be dozens of vacant school premises available for purchase in the next ten years. 🤷‍♂️

The main thing is that we should completely ignore this person because they haven’t spent more than 30 seconds thinking about this.

4 days ago 2 0 1 0

They should do this because every single one of those schools will be absolutely destroyed by the finances of “planting” schools in Hong Kong’s declining student base.
