#Ijf26
At the end of the day, this event brought us hope.
For each talk about censorship and shutdowns, there were twice as many presentations for tools and technologies to counter these threats. Surveillance and censorship technologies are evolving, but so are we.
Adopting new technologies is hard: SplinterCon showcased a wide variety of tools. One thing connected them all: adoption and retention are hard.
That is why we work with others to design technology that is intuitive, secure, and follows the Human Rights Centered Design Methodology
Surveillance and censorship technologies are evolving, but so are we.
From TPSU, Russia's black boxes, to China's Great Firewall, new censorship systems are constantly developed, deployed and sold to provide authoritarian governments with tools to censor and monitor citizens.
Big Tech services can become a liability, and not only because of the platforms themselves. They can also be co-opted or blocked by state actors.
Sometimes, Facebook or Google are the only options for activists. In this case, those companies can become targets for government actors.
Last year we joined technologists, researchers, and policymakers at SplinterCon Paris. This was an opportunity to present our Save app, but also to take stock of how surveillance and censorship are progressing around the world.
Here are our takeaways 👇
