Safe Streets Rally and Hearing this Wednesday 4/22
As the Globe has reported, safe streets projects across the city have been halted with no clear explanation, even losing existing funding. Please join WalkUP Roslindale along with other advocates, city councilors, and fellow residents for a rally…

mamdani being a cheerful normal guy that people project absolute insane things on is one of the things that make him very relatable to me, personally
Never trust an evangelical to Catholic convert. They’ve got some weird shit going on and if they’re self righteous about it they’ll try to make it your problem
I usually frame this "vote" idea as "Residents don't vote on whether (and which) streets get plowed or repaved; we vote for city leadership, and let them figure it out. Why would you vote directly on infrastructure changes?"

Congrats to our federal worker siblings at the VA for this big win! Collective agreements are powerful tools to exercise our rights & protect our jobs. Upholding these agreements helps shield federal workers from political & racialized retaliation. This is why unions matter. #unionstrong
Huge pile of the excess street snow from this winter revealing a graveyard of flexposts.
Other cities have no problem plowing around flexposts but this year they all seem to be gone from Boston's streets.
The Centre Street project build still took 6 months to start from that point! It just made the Winter window. "Plans" are easy to backslide on; built things are much harder to, physically *&* politically. What good is a "bold vision" if it is all plans? Plans are fodder for complainers and opponents
I understand yr point on the outrage - hyperbole on bsky doesn't help much, but pressure still does. In 2023, I saw Michelle tell an auditorium w/ angry West Rox neighbors that the Centre St project was going to happen. And she has more political power now than she did then! I want that Michelle bk.
Not even a year ago, she met with streets advocates personally, during the election season! Our neighborhood group is confused and fearing the worst - it took years to build anything, even in the "good times" of the last four years! (2/2)
The advocates I talk to, in my neighborhood, and in the surrounding neighborhoods, have been "cautiously optimistic" since 2021. Now, they are worried about the continuing "pause" and the radio silence from the Mayor's team on this. (1/2)
If we waited for "consensus" on Centre Street West Roxbury, we would still be waiting to implement the safety changes, instead of doing them in 2023, which was already four (!) years of "community conversation".
I'm always struck by the refusal of otherwise literate adults to distinguish between annoying and dangerous when it comes to bikes. Water is wet and cyclists are less dangerous than cars for pedestrians! Not debatable!

My bar for being “good at supply” would be city wide upzoning by right at 6+ stories.
And yes ESPECIALLY in west Roxbury.
Tierlist of bike rack types: S: Staple, Inverted U/round staple, circle rack; A: Inverted U with a design panel; B: Bollard Racks, Bike Corral, Staple on crossbars; C: bike shaped bike rack, artsy racks (swan shaped); D: Wave Rack; F: coathanger rack; HELL: Wheelbender
I have attempted a tierlist of common styles of bike racks. (Just install staple racks!)

Yes but the Orange Line should really extend out to West Roxbury, with a terminus off the VFW Parkway near the former WR High School. Going only to Roslindale would be a big missed opportunity to do it right the first time.

The post I think about all the time, which is much less famous, is about how when Midwest MAGA bros (like US’s #2) convert to Catholicism, what they actually convert to is the Midwestern Protestant’s idea of Catholicism, which is why it’s so messed up. Not a historian of modern Xianity but yes.
a sidewalk and bike lane covered in snow and the road perfectly cleared. One of these is not like the others. A city's priorities become as clear as the spaces they choose to maintain in the winter.

Yes. Yes it should.
Story time from Ben: “I was out working at events yesterday until 10 pm and didn’t have a chance to shovel the sidewalk in front of my house and was issued a citation. Don’t be like me, make sure to clear your sidewalk. Thanks to Massiel for not judging me and quickly processing my payment.”
100% agree. Ironically, this is the only version of "broken windows" that actually makes any sense, because it has to do with the individual behavior of one person going from getting away with small crimes to getting away with big crimes, instead of being some vague theory about general contagion.
ADA Compliant Ramps Our sidewalk construction program also consists of upgrading our pedestrian ramps to make them ADA compliant. While construction crews are working on ramps, we always make sure that there is access to homes and businesses. In 2021, part of a landmark agreement to make streets and sidewalks more accessible to people with mobility disabilities, the City of Boston agreed to construct and/or upgrade approximately 1600 curb ramps per year until every corner at a pedestrian crossing has an ADA-compliant curb ramps. With every resurfacing operation in the City of Boston, we bring adjacent ramps into ADA compliance and make sidewalk repairs as necessary.
I believe these markings are for the new pedestrian ramp!
