Thanks a lot for your thoughtful comments! The household-level constraints are such an important part of how temporary visa inequality operates. H-1B workers' spouses (who are on the dependent H-4 visa) face a lot of employment restrictions and many are not allowed to work legally.

Temporary visa status is a growing source of inequality.

My dissertation chapter published in IMR uses 3.4M population-level administrative records of H-1B workers. I show they are OVEREDUCATED and paid 10% less than similarly employed U.S. citizens.
