As history has shown, local broadcaster consolidation does not lead to more local journalism. Instead, it leads to less local news through journalist layoffs.

There's bipartisan agreement that the Nexstar-TEGNA merger—the largest local broadcast TV transaction in history—should've been voted by the full Commission, not approved behind closed doors to help billionaire buddies bypass the law.

Good news! Despite the FCC using the Billionaire Buddy Bypass to rush approval of the unlawful Nexstar-TEGNA merger, a federal court has put it on hold.

This deal would raise prices for consumers and gut local newsrooms.

The FCC chose billionaires. The courts chose consumers.

The days of the FCC as a paper tiger will come to an end.

What the public will remember is who complied in advance and who stood firm.

Broadcasters, journalists, and the public must recognize these threats for what they are and call that bluff.

This is not a coincidence. It is a pattern.

It tells you exactly who this FCC is working for.

And it is certainly not the vast majority of American consumers.

If you are a billionaire, tell me who you know and what you believe, and I will tell you how fast your deal gets approved.

Meanwhile, smaller transactions from less-connected companies, filed months earlier, are still waiting.

We are seeing it play out again with the proposed Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount merger.

And we saw it last week's rushed, closed-door $6.2 billion approval of the unlawful Nexstar-TEGNA merger.

We saw it with the Paramount-Skydance transaction, where the FCC immediately approved the deal after Skydance agreed to make CBS more friendly to this administration and after CBS paid to settle a bogus lawsuit.

The unlawful Nexstar-TEGNA merger sailed through multiple levels of regulatory scrutiny in a single day.

It is just the latest example of the Billionaire Bypass.
