Barriers to public outreach — and why scientists need to overcome them When the author began to research why some scientists were hesitant to do this work, four main themes emerged.

“By talking to the public about our work, we can help rebuild a society that acknowledges the significance of science in everyday life and ensures that everyone has access to the information we need for informed decision-making.”

Jane Goodall, who revealed the intimate lives of chimpanzees and gave the modern world a language of hope, has died at the age of 91.

“Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference,” she told audiences. Those words remain her truest epitaph.

These were the only photos I took the entire week…but the @icft2025.bsky.social was a huge success and I felt incredibly grateful to attend and present my research on lake trout spawning behavior in Lake Erie.

The Extinction of Truth Or, a Colossal Pile of Bullshit

I've written a Substack about the #ColossalBioSci #DeExtinction #DisInformation campaign; it's focused on polluting the information landscape, rather than the underlying science (except for species concepts, I talk about them)

NEW PAPER, JUST OUT! 👀

Insects from the '70s and '80s were already collecting microplastic, decades before the term microplastic even existed. 🤯

A thread on the surprising history of this pollutant and the incredible insect larvae that helped us uncover it. 🐛

Today, we share our love for federal #fisheries professionals who work tirelessly to address the myriad problems facing our nation’s fisheries. We urge the Administration to stop indiscriminate mass firings and to build and maintain a sufficient federal natural resource workforce.

Can freshwater mussels clean the Niagara River? UB scientists are investigating if the water and sediment quality of the upper river can support these organisms that naturally filter out contaminants.

Wading into the bsky world with an update on my lab. My university's comms team did a nice write-up on our new project on native mussels. We're propagating unionids as the first baby step toward a reintroduction program in the Niagara River watershed. Really fun departure from my usual fishy focus!
