thank you for the share. I cried. How awful, and awful to think about how many more of these cases there will be.

I like to imagine that Zohran Mamdani, Socialist African-born Muslim, was literally willed into existence by the collective psychosis of the Tea Party GOP over Obama, like the ectoplasm under NYC in Ghostbusters II

Brief fun survey from Jessica, Andrew & myself:

If you are a faculty member, research scientist, postdoc, or senior Ph.D. student in any area of science, please take five minutes and fill it out. We’ll share the results widely along with some reflections.

The other thing is that in a gig economy there is no degree that promises a good career anymore, not because you should have studied computer science or social media management instead of history or Russian literature, but because there are no careers

In general, (re)orienting education wholly or chiefly to specific perceived market needs is always going to produce disaster once the near term passes. It also eviscerates institutions that might otherwise help people weather change, intellectually and in other ways

“Peace through strength”?

In twelve days at Camp David, for about the cost of one Hellfire missile, President Carter won peace in the Middle East. No bridge was destroyed; no person was injured. This was peace through strength. ...

After $6B data center plan, Festus voters oust every incumbent council member A week after a controversial vote to approve rules for a CRG Clayco data center, anti-data center candidates ousted half of the Festus City Council.

"The promise of a political reckoning made by residents opposed to a $6 billion data center proposal in Festus came true Tuesday, as four city council members lost their reelection bids."

Worr Happy with zoom AI Companion printed on a background that starts as light blue in the upper left handcorner and moves toward violet in the bottom righthand corner. Small difficult to read boxes suggest I could "summarize recent messages", "list my action items" or "show me the meeting highlights"

Waiting in a zoom lobby has given me a lot of time to ponder the claim below.

Would I, indeed, "work happy" with an AI companion?

Perhaps I can happily watch movies while zoom lists my action items and summarizes messages?

“Do not put money in the pocket of a woman who has sworn publicly to use it to disenfranchise vulnerable populations” is the smallest ask imaginable. It’s not oxygen, it’s not food. It’s television. You can do without. There are thousands of other shows for you to watch.

“I am political,” Ms. Rachel told me of her new effort to free kids from ICE detention.

“It’s political to believe that children are worthy of love … and that our care shouldn’t stop at what we look like, our family, at our religion, at a border. Mr. Rogers was very political.”

And books are not causing the assaults,” writes Shannon Hale in an op-ed. “But books can aid in clarifying what…

Tufts raised $21.7 million for a pool but keeps saying it doesn't have the money to provide cost of living raises to faculty who do the foremost job of a university: teaching. (This is to say nothing of what I'm sure will be pitiful offers to the janitors when they start bargaining this spring.)

he said so much truth here - about performance of straightness, about how hard boys are taught/pressured/bullied into acting like MEN and not given room to be themselves.

and you are so right about the supremacist angle - it's the white supremacy but also masculine, and physical strength Supremacy
