Chatbot Democracy Abstract. What will be the role of chatbots in 21st century democratic processes? Considering the potential implementations of artificial intelligence (AI)

I wrote Chatbot Democracy because, despite the spread of AI chatbots in govt, there's a lack of research on their impacts and implementations. This is troubling, as AI chatbots will continue to proliferate, in access, deliberative, and representative uses. Free link: academic.oup.com/ppmg/advance...

We need content provenance/authentication. Adobe & partners have been working on standards (Content Authenticity Initiative)—they can’t come soon enough. Apple & Android & social media must integrate cryptographic authentication for photos & video if we’re going to have a useful town square online.

The future is a federated system, of social, political, & economic platforms, that are built on open-source standards, with open-source tools, that facilitate the pursuit of dreams & desires, lend confidence in government through transparency-by-design—ultimately, a real 21st century public commons.

#HiSciSky #AcademicSky #PhDSky, I'm a policy researcher (@mathematicanow.bsky.social) and do some critical technology studies. Trying to finish a PhD. Hope to meet some neat folks and talk about assets and social policy, baby bonds and basic income, welfare history and inequality, oh and platforms!

My partner (academic) encouraged me to try it out. Disillusioned, skeptical of, and disinterested with social media platforms but maybe Bluesky can change my perspective.
