Why does an animated movie need to appeal to people under 20? Animation is a tool of storytelling, its not an exclsive thing for kids

Oh no. a kid asking for a quarter to make a call. How will i survive.

This school allows phones but the kids ive met have either forgot their phone at home, it died during the day, or they are grounded and their parents took the cellphone away. Some schools are restricting phones though so having public phones would be a good resource.

Woah thats rare! I think theres a little vestibule by a nearby liquor store but the phone part is gone, its just a box. I wonder how many are actually still functioning.

Yup! Or tie it to their student ID number. Like you have to input that in order to make a call so the school has a call history to prevent pranks.

Also, the school i was at is a middle school. Many of the kids walk home or walk a few blocks to a meet up spot for their ride home. If they leave campus but need to come back to call their parents, the office staff may have already left. Shit happens.

Office staff and teachers have families to go home to. They cant be expected to stay until the campus is empty. Janitors, supervising teachers and security are around but with large campuses and large class sizes its unrealistic to expect staff to stay until the campus is empty.

I graduated in 2013 and my school didnt have payphones but there was an empty hallway space where they used to be available. Maybe they took them away to prevent prank calls? But with tech these days they can figure out a work around and put the phones back.

A lady asked for directions today in chinese so i helped her out but now im going to spend the rest of the week second guessing if i sent her to the right place 🫣. 高中学 and 中学 are too similar!

Many kids stay after school for extracurricular and the office isnt always open that late.

The kids who ask me for help are there long after dismissal and the office may already be closed. My ask for public phones is more than for just students, its for all the public’s convenience and safety. Cell phones die, get lost, or lose signal. Having reliable and easy to use landlines is good.

If it was run through a competent government and made a non-profit service like USPS it could be. I want my taxes to go towards things like public phones.

Considering my taxes currently go towards bombing children in the middle east and funding the education and healthcare of an apartheid ethnostate, i’d rather we pay for public phones. Fuck the cost and your tone. This isnt an outrageous ask of our government.

I am a crossing guard, i dont work for the school. The office and school staff goes home before all after school activities are finished. Shit happens. A public phone could help. Maybe the phone could be on campus as well like they used to be back in the day.

How do i get Mamdani on this and make it spread all the way to LA? Hey @mayor.nyc.gov how do you feel about payphones? Can we bring those back thanks. 😊

The more i think about it the more insane it is that we got rid of basically all public phones. There so much of this country that has shitty or no cell service. What if youre in an accident? Need to call home and cell broke? Nobdy around to help you? PAYPHONE!!!

“They can go to the school office-“ ok eff that im all in on we need federally funded city phones for public use. Its a safety thing for everyone and we shouldnt be so reliant on cellphones and cell service. Im so serious rn. Make my taxes go to city provided landline phones just do it.

Its a public good. Not everything has to make money. Payphones should be like the USPS. Not for profit and federally funded for the good of the people.

Not if they stayed after school and the building is closed. Im saying we need payphones/city phones for the city, not just for students. Its a safety thing for everyone. We are too reliant on cellphones.

Why not though. Seems like something that could be put back with the right motivation. Maybe not as prevalent as before but better than nothing.

Before phones? Like before 1889? Back then people were in emergencies without being able to contact help. Now we only have cellphones but god forbid that breaks. Payphones would be nice as a backup in 2026.

Yup!! Super helpful for everyone 🙌

What if a kid isnt near their school and needs a phone. Im saying we need city payphones back around town not just for this specific situation. Cell phones die, parents take away phone privileges, or kids forget them at home. Having public phones is good.

Probably depends on the school and situation tbh.

They probably have one but i think he was embarrassed to be crying and didnt want to go back into the building. I’ll have to ask around about that tho. They tend to ask me for help a decent amount of time after the final bell so idk how long the office staff is around.

Also good reminder that kids need to know their parent’s phone number for this exact situation. The kid from today was stress crying and thankfully still remembered mom’s number but i cant imagine his panic if he only had it programed on the phone he forgot at home.
