In a joyful Budapest, I see the chance of an unprecedented transition | Timothy Garton Ash With the ejection of Trumpian hero Viktor Orbán, Hungarians demanded a restored democracy. Now, Europe must support them, says historian, political writer and Guardian columnist Timothy Garton Ash

What with Brexit and a bunch of other setbacks since he covered the hopefulness of Europe in the 90s, I do feel glad for Timothy Garton Ash to see this victory.

NASA just shared the closest image ever taken of Jupiter...

Each one of those swirls is a storm bigger than the entire Earth and going on for centuries. Let that sink in.

NYC has fewer pedestrian deaths than LA not just on a per capita basis, but in aggregate.

In 2025,
NYC: 111 deaths

My son just read Catcher in the Rye for English 11. Which I thought was weird because we live in Canada, but the American canon lives on.

Seems to be just a general culture war trope? Suburbanites and exurbanites freaking out about... nothing? Even my walkable, bikeable town here in Canada is like this. "Would you like my kids to hold your hand while they show you around downtown?" Main grievance actually is find parking.

Poetry Challenge: Memorize “The More Loving One” by W.H. Auden (Gift Article) It’s about love, the cosmos and everything in between. And all week we’ll have games and readings by poets laureate, beloved authors and an Oscar winner to help you memorize it.

My 6th grade teacher had us compete each term to memorise the most lines of poetry. Those 100s of poems and 1000s of lines still rattle around my mind, making the world, & every day in it, deeper and richer.

This is a new one. Someone subscribed to the newsletter using their work email address. Now their dumb AI assistant is replying to the emails like this. What a world we live in.

An Open Letter to Members of the Legislative Assembly Working towards the recognition, implementation and exercise of our inherent Indigenous Title, Rights and Treaty Rights

"First Nations should not be asked by the Crown to compromise their human rights. No other segment of society is asked to put their rights on hold while the government seeks to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada to undermine those very rights." www.ubcic.bc.ca/open_letter_...

It is super weird. I think the idea was that he was going to do the vote tomorrow and rely on Opposition votes to get it passed? Maybe somebody (perhaps a Legislative page who just completed poli sci 101) explained the implications of that, hence the U-turn (a perfect 360).

Adam Olsen was on CHEK this evening (before latest U-turn) saying Eby was repeating the same lies about FN told since beginning of colonization. Intransigence, stonewalling, threat to private property.

Not exactly caving, it's more like Eby is replicating the Nutty Putty Cave Accident.
