This photo is so beautifully lit that it looks like a still from a movie. This is the Southern Pacific’s Sunset Limited awaiting departure from LA bound for New Orleans. The train was all Pullman train (ie a hotel on wheels) which was good because it took 41 hours to complete.

Got our solar panels installed this AM. They came at 8:30am and we're gone by 1:30pm. 13 panels and 10kwh battery.
We can't export to the grid yet (the network operator has been flooded with new requests) but we charged our car with the sun this afternoon. Great feeling, strongly recommend.
mRNA vaccines continue to show major promise.
In a small Phase 1 trial led by Dr. Balachandran, some patients with pancreatic cancer (one of the deadliest cancers) reached 6-year survival.
This is why sustained investment in science & research matters.

Photo taken April 18, 2026, near Hayfork Creek, #TrinityCounty, #NorthernCalifornia of some Scarlet Fritillary flowers. What caught my eye with these flowers was the tiny beam of light that was glowing inside the top flower. #photography #nature #wildflowers
Mount Shasta looms over the iron gateway to Weed, California.
Another EV road trip on the books: 1,750 mi round trip from Seattle to Santa Cruz.
Noticeably more fast chargers out there since last time we did this trip a few years ago - we never had to wait for one to open up, which wasn’t the case several years ago.
Prize for most scenic charger: Weed, CA.
After big dams on the upper Klamath River in far northern CA were removed in 2024, Chinook (king) salmon migrated upstream for the first time in 100+ years--and now they have hatched.
We label “organic” foods as if they’re something different.
We’re doing it backwards.
We should label foods that are processed as they are what’s unnatural.
This is tragically beautiful.
Young adult happiness is falling. Percent of young people who are pretty or very happy has dropped from 88% to 76% over the last 15 years after having held fairly steady between 1980 and 2010
My hottest “I have no data to back this up” take is that phones aren’t making young people less happy. What’s making them less happy is living in a world where everyone is having their reality defined by recommendation algorithms that can only care about whether something keeps you watching.
OFFICIAL from @noaa.gov today: March blew the cover off the record books here in the U.S.

I wish science could explain what’s happening.

A picture of a cat. It says, “4 years ago lived in a bush and hunted my own meals. Now I have 2 passive incomes, my own house, & a personal chef. Follow me for more financial advice.”
“When mayors in other cities ask me how #Copenhagen afforded to invest in its cycling networks, I ask them how on earth they have been able to afford highway projects. We invested in bike lanes because that was the cheapest option.”
What the world can learn from Copenhagen’s cycling revolution.
Watch out for the "dear" pedestrians when traveling through Weaverville CA. Also, watch for deer. #jaywalking, #weaverville
Here’s some positive science news: researchers at MIT have shown that messenger RNA can activate a biological pathway that triggers the immune system to attack tumors.

NASA mapped the entire ocean floor using gravity from space. 😮
Saw an old interview with Frank Herbert who said “I don’t think that the old saw about power corrupting and absolute power corrupting absolutely is accurate. I think power attracts the corruptible” and, yeah, that.

The reason fingers work on touchscreens but not inanimate objects is the phone is powered by consuming a tiny piece of your soul

The Storm Prediction Center at NOAA is indicating there could be a risk of thunderstorms as we head into the day on Wednesday. We could see isolated to scattered storms develop across areas in light green on the graphic below.
A mostly blue canvas with hundreds of knife scrapes of dozens of different colors The eye is guided from a darker area on the left to what appears to be a bright city or area aglow
This painting was on the wall in the room where I held my friend when he took his final breath this past weekend
