The tree growth comes to a stop as the ground becomes too numerous with stone. Ground covering plants blanket the rocks & act as a border for the trees. On top of a prominent stone is a golden ground squirrel, standing on its hind legs.

After Andi and I hiked up to the summit of Brokeoff Mountain and enjoyed our cookies, I set the camera up for a photo of us with Lassen in the background. I forgot to manually focus the camera so when it snapped the shot Lassen was in focus and we were not. This was a year before I went digital so I didn't know until I got the film back. 🤷🏻♂️

A serene setting along the early trail among evergreens, concealing the 'hell' that awaits further along.
Looking out from the rocky outcrop that makes an early viewpoint towards what I believe is Pilot Pinnacle.
Various pools of turquoise or grey water with steam escaping from hydrothermal vents make up Bumpass Hell, an inhospitable landscape with the slight screaming sounds emanating all around it. A boardwalk cuts along the pools for viewing up close. Outside of the 'hell', evergreens grow in the corners of the frame.
