Yet more habitat destruction around the eastern half of Dundee made for a soul-destrying day's birding, with the only real highlight being a new addition to my 2026Dundee150 list.

Bird place-name of the day 142: CARNFORTH (Lancs). OE cran + ford. ‘Cranes’ ford’. #PlaceNames #birdsandplace #naturewriting
A sky mottling from greys to cadmium white, moves in still shot, trees black reach towards it
Clouds the chin of a fin whale,
Impasto striped
pearl glades in pebble swathes,
a single cluster cauliflower
unfurls it's slow body:
caterpillar
dragon
soup.
Air prepared for show,
Listen to what you can see.

Crikey. In some esteemed company on the bookshelf in the wonderful Woodstock Bookshop. What it is to have a surname beginning with M (or N). 'This Is Not My Land' in all good bookshops, including Woodstock. Thank you for stocking. #nature #naturewriting #slowtravel #books #Oxfordshire #Cotswolds
In the heart of Queens Park, Glasgow, the bones of medieval agriculture are still clear to the eye and easily felt underfoot. This month's essay weaves my discovery of old rig and furrow - and its legacy of collective care - with the realisation of my own garden's season of isolation. #naturewriting

💧Happy publication day to #TheWaterlands by @steverutt.bsky.social!
Follow a raindrop as it flows through diverse waterscapes: river sources, saltmarsh-flanked firths and estuaries, spectacular lochs, crystal-clear chalk streams, blanket bogs and more.

Since I’m relatively new to Bluesky, I’m posting a few essays from the before times.
This one explores the "mysterious intersections of humanity and kingdom animalia," from the menageries of the Medici to a feral dog in the American suburbs who became mine. #EssaySky #NatureSky #NatureWriting

Just finished reading The Brilliant Abyss by @helenscales.bsky.social after realising I just didn't know enough about hydrothermal vents. Brilliant abyss, brilliant #naturewriting. The deep really is full of wonders, to explore and to defend from predatory extractivist capitalism.
Late posting of @theguardian.com today. After a wonderful weekend at @gilbertwhites.bsky.social, I slept for nearly 24 hours! (Need to build in time to recover when you live with energy-limiting conditions.)
