Sharp-winged Drill moth

Sharp-winged Drill moth

Hi. I'm Sharp-winged Drill moth. I don't know why they call me that, I sound like a monster. I prefer Common Daisy Moth. I like daisies. Oh and tansies! I'm not from around here. Do you know any nice flower beds? Want to show me around?

A little bit of colour in this morning's moth trap. Only my second Early Thorn (and first of the spring generation) and one of two Frosted Green, more regular in the garden but great to see after none in '25. #norfolkmoths #mothsmatter #teammoth #moths #bugsky

It’s maybe 3” in length or more. With the wind blowing, it was hard to get my hand close enough without disturbing it.

Secret night operations between moths and colored-nectar flowers Researchers Soma Chiyoda, Ko Mochizuki, and Atsushi Kawakita from the University of Tokyo have discovered that nocturnal hawkmoths are the main pollinators of Jasminanthes mucronata, a plant species native to Japan that produces black nectar. This is the first time that a colored-nectar flower is confirmed to be mainly pollinated by nocturnal insects. The discovery thus promotes further research into this so far unexplored ecology. The findings were published in the journal Ecology.

Box Tree Moth

Box Tree Moth

Psst. Are you a fellow Box Tree Moth? We gotta look out for each other. They discovered our invasion and are out to get us. You’d think they’d like us eating non-native boxwood shrubs, but I guess they’re “decorative.” Wanna meet up later?
