My classmate Emmanuel has gotten IRB approval to run a quick study of Somerville residents -- see if ppl might be willing to track carbon emissions, and if so, how he can help! I can vouch for Emma's good intent. I had a convo w/him today about if he does produce an app, what might be helpful […]

A photo of retired forester and restoration ecologist Nick Ledgard shows the class some of his restoration trial plots. There are cages and uncaged plots on the burnt forest floor, some with native seedlings planted in them and others have forest litter. The cages are to protect from the deer and hares that are widespread in the area.

Secret night operations between moths and colored-nectar flowers Researchers Soma Chiyoda, Ko Mochizuki, and Atsushi Kawakita from the University of Tokyo have discovered that nocturnal hawkmoths are the main pollinators of Jasminanthes mucronata, a plant species native to Japan that produces black nectar. This is the first time that a colored-nectar flower is confirmed to be mainly pollinated by nocturnal insects. The discovery thus promotes further research into this so far unexplored ecology. The findings were published in the journal Ecology.
