Who needs keyboard accessibility? People who can’t use a mouse to navigate a site including people who are blind and use a screen reader, have a mobility impairment, are suffering from a temporary injury, or have a long-term repetitive strain injury.
A keyboard is illustrating what keys are needed to check website accessibility. These are: Tab to navigate to elements e.g. links, Enter to activate links or select an item, Esc to close an element, and arrow keys within elements(e.g. drop down menus).
What to assess using only a keyboard online. Can you: Navigate with the tab key in the same order as the page layout? See whereabouts you are on the page e.g. is there a hover state around a link? Access all features and links and operate controls?
Millions of people use a keyboard to navigate a site, however it's one of the most common audit testing failures. The good thing is, anyone can do a quick test to see if they can easily use all features and navigate a site.
