The Conference of the Ardeidae ...and the foot/bike commutes by the Olentangy River that made me a bird lover

Blog from 2024 about formative experiences of nature and #birds in Columbus' Olentangy Wetland Research Park (c. 2019-21) - a reminder that, even though I'm lately writing for #Rewilding Earth, I won't deny the significance of such small urban restoration projects.

Cold, grey day but lots of beautiful wildflowers in the garden, including marsh marigolds, cowslips and primroses and a lovely snake’s head fritillary which I grew from seed.

The insane vine, Fortunes Spindle, with fat parts exposed. The only good thing about it is it’s forcing me to get out and use my muscles. 😃

I posted before about the horrible invasive vine in the back. We have been working on it and now the huge trunks, I assume I can call them vine trunks, are more visible. Started with small clippers, then loppers and now we have added a saw. #rewilding #wichita #kansas #tree #vine

AI makes rewilding look tame - misses its messy reality London, Mar 28 (The Conversation) Humans have always imagined the natural world. From Ice Age cave paintings to the modern day, we depict the animals and landscapes we value – and ignore those we don't. Now, artificial intelligence is doing the imagining for us. And when asked to picture "rewilded" Britain, it produces landscapes that are strikingly similar – and tame. Two geographers at the University of Aberdeen recently did exactly this. In their research, they present examples of how widely used AI chatbots (Gemini, ChatGPT and others) generated images of rewilded landscapes in the UK. The bots were prompted with commands such as "Can you produce an image of what rewilding in Scotland looks like?" or "Create an image of what rewilding in England looks like", tailored to each bot's style. The authors recognise that the commands are very general, but that gives the bots free rein. The images generated were then compared using both the composition (for example, point of view, scale, lighting) and content (what is in the picture and what is not, primarily the habitat types, species or humans). A landscape without risk ------------------------------ The AI rewilded landscapes were all very similar, all but one featuring...

Rewilding relies on collaboration, so how do we make this happen? Rewilding continues to grow in importance for both academic researchers and hands-on practitioners. These two communities have a shared interest in facilitating nature recovery at a time of rapid environmental change. But they too often operate separately from one another. When collaboration does happen, it can transform the pace, costs and outcomes of biodiversity action. However, collaboration is a tricky matter, facing several challenges and barriers. In 2025, the British Ecological Society’s (BES) Rewilding Special Interest Group (SIG) ran a series of online workshops asking three key questions: What are the opportunities for collaboration? How do we do it equitably and ethically? And how do we make it accessible? These events aimed to improve our understanding of how rewilding researchers and practitioners currently collaborate, and how they could collaborate more in future. Here’s what we learnt. What’s the scope for collaboration? There are great examples of rewilding researchers and practitioners collaborating to benefit science and practice – but there is potential for more. Environmental management and research are both complex endeavours, and practitioners and scientists grapple with diverse and changing responsibilities and constraints that limit collaboration. When collaboration does happen, it can transform the pace, costs and outcomes of biodiversity...

Surtsey: A Case Study in “Self-Willed Land” Dave Foreman often reminded us that “wilderness” means “self-willed land” — land where natural processes are left alone to unfold as they will. But is

My latest blog for @rewilding.org looks at the volcanic island Surtsey as a case study in "self-willed land." I've not heard Surtsey discussed in #rewilding circles, yet it strikes me as a fine example of "letting beings [& ecological processes] be" - as Foreman urged.

A South African reserve shows how carbon can catalyze rewilding conservation TSWALU KALAHARI RESERVE, South Africa — From high on a promontory in the Korannaberg Mountains, a mountain zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae) peers down to the west across the green-dappled plain below, the sun rising behind. In the distance, wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) hunt in the veld, verdant after early rains. And nearby, white rhinos (Ceratotherium simum) graze among thorny thickets. These species, and dozens more, persist here thanks to a decades-long effort to rewild a sliver of Southern Africa’s great desert and dry savanna. The Tswalu Kalahari Reserve has become a sanctuary for rare and threatened animals, drawing in a steady stream of well-heeled tourists from around the globe. More recently, the reserve’s managers have embarked on a quest to increase the carbon stored in its soils — a quest that relies heavily on the reserve’s animals. At first glance, places like Tswalu might not seem suited for stockpiling carbon. The Tswana people call this part of the world Kgalagadi — “the waterless place.” Fickle precipitation in the Kalahari averages a scant 10-50 centimeters (4-20 inches) annually, and much less in some years. That means the comparative lushness here in late 2025 could evaporate if the rains don’t carry on...

Rewilding Arts Prize announces 20 Canadian artists as finalists TORONTO, March 5, 2026 — The David Suzuki Foundation today announced 20 finalists for the 2026 Rewilding Arts Prize, a national award recognizing artists whose work explores renewed relationships between people, land, water and the living world. From the Northwest Territories to the Maritimes, and working across disciplines including sculpture, installation, land-based practice, fibre, digital media and community-engaged art, the shortlisted artists reflect the many ways rewilding is being imagined and practised today. “This shortlist shows how artists across Canada are responding to ecological change in deeply place-based and creative ways,” said Jode Roberts, manager of the David Suzuki Foundation’s Rewilding Communities program. “Together, their work reflects rewilding not as a single aesthetic but as a shared commitment to care, responsibility and imagination.” The Rewilding Arts Prize received over 650 submissions from artists working in urban, rural and remote communities. The 16 shortlisted artists were selected by a national jury of eight artists — and previous Rewilding Arts Prize winners — based on artistic impact, relevance to rewilding, diversity of perspectives and creative spark. “This was one of the hardest shortlisting processes I’ve been part of,” said juror Angela Marsh. “The response was overwhelming — not just in numbers, but...

Beavers ‘breathe new life’ into Dorset as dams built and biodiversity returns National Trust says one year after reintroduction they are enriching habitats and may be having kits this summer

Good news!
The National Trust said it was thrilled the beavers had been reshaping their new home in #Dorset where they have felled trees to construct a 35-metre dam, slowing the flow of a stream and creating a deep, wildlife-rich pool.
