Multi-marker eDNA metabarcoding revealed contrasting biodiversity organization and assembly in two alpine river systems on the Qinghai–Xizang Plateau. Climatic and hydrological gradients structured community composition and interactions. Co-occurrence networks showed cohesive communities in the cold Yellow River but modular, flexible ones in the monsoon-influenced Nujiang River.

A 'three-legged stool' of hemlock conservation Just 10 miles from Pack Demonstration Forest, a 2,500-acre wood managed by SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, hemlock woolly adelgid is infesting the trees. It’s too soon to know if the invasive insect is already in the canopy of this forestland in the southeastern Adirondacks. If they are not already there, researchers and land managers believe the question is when, not if, they arrive. So to prepare the trees for the coming threat, researchers are conducting a unique experiment, implementing different tree thinning practices. The goal is to get some of the hemlocks more sunlight to see if that bolsters the trees’ health. The experiment piggybacks off of silviculture already happening in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Albert “Bud” Mayfield is a research entomologist with the U.S. Forest Service’s Southern Research Station. He and his colleagues have implemented these forestry techniques and found some success. The Explorer spoke with him for the March/April issue of the magazine for a story about the experiment. This interview was edited for brevity and clarity. Check out the full story about what’s happening at Pack Demonstration Forest in the March/April issue, which will also soon be online. Explorer: It feels like it’s always...

Clean Energy on Tap: Energy and Conservation in the Coastal Bend Along the Coastal Bend, nature and communities are facing increasing pressure from land degradation, water strain, air pollution, and the loss of vital wildlife habitat. At the same time, Corpus Christi and the surrounding coast have long been at the center of America’s energy story. For generations, the region has helped power the nation through its ports, pipelines, refineries, and offshore operations in the Gulf. This history has shaped local economies and communities, providing jobs and supporting industry across the state. Today, as Texas continues to grow, our energy needs are rising quickly. Meeting that demand in a way that protects land, air, water, and wildlife is one of our biggest challenges. Wind and solar energy already play a major role in addressing that challenge, bringing cleaner air, lower water use, strong economic benefits, and increased grid reliability. With thoughtful siting and responsible development, clean energy can coexist with working lands and sensitive habitats across the Coastal Bend. Clean Energy on Tap will bring together conservation leaders, land stewards, wildlife experts, and clean energy practitioners for a relaxed evening of conversation at Lazy Beach Brewing and Cafe in downtown Corpus Christi...

Pilot waste disposal programme shows Sabah water villages can be active partners in conservation KOTA KINABALU: For years, water villages in Semporna have struggled with solid waste, often making headlines for marine pollution and environmental degradation. One such example can be seen in Kampung Sri Aman, where homes are built over the sea, and the absence of a proper waste management system results in rubbish ending up directly in the ocean. That narrative is beginning to change through the introduction of a structured, community-based waste management system under the Semporna Waste Management Programme led by Reef Check Malaysia, where bins are provided and waste collection scheduled. Studies were conducted to assess the total waste generated, its composition and the best approach to its management, Reef Check Malaysia said in a statement. With support from the Semporna District Office and District Council, and the Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry as well as private sector partners, it conducted a comprehensive door-to-door waste audit. Covering 80 households and approximately 656 residents, the study revealed that the village generated an estimated 230.31kg of waste per day, with over 95% of households not having proper access to waste bins and trash being thrown directly into the sea. These findings highlighted a systemic issue: waste pollution in the village...

Viewpoint: We need robust investment in Conservation Technical Assistance I’ll say something that might surprise people: I am a strong private property rights advocate, and I am a strong supporter of Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) conservation programs. To me, those two things are not contradictory; they are very much aligned. NRCS programs are voluntary. Nobody makes you enroll. Nobody tells you how to run your ranch. What they offer is technical expertise and cost-share funding to landowners who want to improve their operations and their land. That is not government overreach. That is the government working the way it should and supporting the decisions of private landowners rather than dictating them. We run a cow-calf operation and are passionate about making it better. That means incorporating new practices, infrastructure and technology into our grazing management to build more resilient grasslands, such as precision grazing tools, virtual fencing and updated watering infrastructure. These investments pay off in healthier cattle and land that holds up through drought. NRCS staff offers technical assistance to help landowner and ranching families think through what makes sense for their specific landscape and access programs that make the economics work. We have implemented water infrastructure and virtual fencing as an important part of improving our...
