This hidden state of water could explain why life exists Water is everywhere and essential for life, yet it does not act like most other liquids. Properties such as density, heat capacity, viscosity, and compressibility respond to temperature and pressure in ways that are opposite to what scientists see in typical substances. In most materials, cooling causes them to contract and become denser. Based on this pattern, water should reach its highest density when it freezes. Instead, ice floats, and liquid water is actually most dense at 4 degrees C. That is why colder water remains below warmer water in lakes and oceans. When water is cooled below 4 degrees, it begins expanding again. If pure water is cooled below 0 degrees (where crystallization happens slowly), this expansion continues and even accelerates as the temperature drops further. Other properties, including compressibility and heat capacity, also behave in increasingly unusual ways as the temperature decreases. Capturing Water's Hidden State With X-Ray Lasers To investigate these strange behaviors, scientists used extremely fast x-ray pulses generated by powerful lasers in South Korea. These pulses allowed them to observe water in a supercooled state just before it turned into ice. "What was special was that we were able to X-ray unimaginably fast before the...

Climate change is reshaping Arctic rivers in different ways Water in the Arctic may seem quiet, but it affects the whole planet. Rivers carry melted snow into the ocean, shaping ice, currents, and global temperatures. Something has started to change. Scientists tracking these waters now see patterns that do not follow a simple trend. Some regions are getting wetter, while others are drying out. The old idea that a warming Arctic would simply mean more water everywhere is starting to fall apart. Watching Arctic rivers from space For years, researchers depended on measuring stations planted along riverbanks. These gauges recorded how much water flowed through major rivers. But the Arctic is vast and difficult to reach. Keeping those stations running costs time and money, and many have been shut down. So scientists looked up. Satellites now circle Earth, quietly collecting data about water, snow, soil, and rainfall. By combining these streams of information, researchers have built a new way to track how water moves across the Arctic without setting foot on the ground. This effort comes from a team working through the European Space Agency’s STREAM-NEXT project. The group, led by researchers from Italy’s National Research Council and the University of Perugia, created a model that uses only satellite...

Waterlogged path. As the year moves on it will dry out, you can pass with wellies now, but it's still close to the top in places.

Handpumps bring water to rural African communities, but many are broken - study models how best to maintain them In rural sub-Saharan Africa, access to clean drinking water often depends on a simple technology: the handpump. These manually operated systems pump water out of the ground for more than 184 million people. Yet despite their importance, research has found that at least 100,000 handpumps out of the 500,000 to 1.3 million in use in sub-Saharan Africa are not functioning. This is a hidden crisis. It means rural people are not getting water, not because new infrastructure is needed and not being built, but because existing water systems aren’t working. Read more: Groundwater supplies on Kenya’s coast must be managed for people and industry We are a team of operations management researchers who look at how organisations make decisions when they don’t have the time, the money, or the staff to do everything at once. Our research focuses on how nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) manage and maintain rural water systems. Our latest research investigated how maintenance can be designed to keep water flowing more reliably when resources and information are limited. We worked closely with three NGOs in Ethiopia, Malawi and the Central African Republic to find out how they maintain their water pump systems. In total, we looked at 3,584...

Tim Steller's column: Credibility lost along with water in serious Tucson leak When I stopped by Zayna Mediterranean Restaurant on Saturday afternoon, a stream was flowing through the parking lot, shallow but about six feet wide. That meant both shoes got wet as I stepped twice in the clear water on the way to pick up some babaganoush, and again on the way back to the car with my precious cargo. I didn't bother reporting or asking about it: The Midway Wash empties into the popular Midtown restaurant's parking lot before flowing up North Belvedere Avenue to storm drains at East Pima Street, and on to the Rillito. I figured the people at Zayna knew whether it was a problem. This turns out to have been a faulty assumption I shared with many people who crossed this stream of water over a lifespan that lasted a hard-to-explain six to seven days. Lots of people figured someone else knew what was happening and didn't make sure someone really figured it out. That led to a waste of maybe 1 million gallons or more of potable water, according to rough stream-flow calculations done by a hydrologist who lives nearby. If so, that would be enough water for at least 134 households for a year...
