Commentary: Congress' road to affordable housing ignores what comes next Affordability is the buzzword on every political pundit’s tongue this year, and rightfully so — Americans are struggling to keep their head above water as costs continue to rise. In response, Congress has mostly set partisanship aside to provide Americans relief for one of the costliest pillars of American life: housing. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act that passed the Senate will reform regulatory barriers and streamline construction, right-sizing the gap between supply and demand that has driven housing prices through the roof. It now faces a precarious path in the House, and while my former colleagues should pass the bill, we must recognize that this legislation has a massive blindspot. This “road” to housing still leaves Americans exposed to the skyrocketing costs of continued homeownership — most notably, the skyrocketing costs of home insurance. I have heard from families across Florida who are shouldering the financial burdens of the state’s increasing exposure to extreme weather events and the flooding and wind damage associated with them. Insurance models were not designed to handle the severity and cadence of today’s storms and disasters. To cover these growing and unprecedented losses, insurers are hiking coverage rates beyond what families can reasonably...
