Parks board approves multiple grants, easements and property actions; nominations deferred to April The Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation approved several consent and grant items — including grant increases for Watkins Park and Centennial Park, a monument ownership transfer, grant amendments and in‑kind gifts — and deferred officer nominations and a conservation easement to committee review.

Big changes are coming to Nashville's parks, with major grant increases and new projects approved—what does this mean for the community?

Volunteer watershed group urges county help to stop Silver Lake’s decline, proposes dredging and management Jeff Curry, chair of the Silver Lake Watershed Advisory Council, told commissioners volunteers have tracked worsening phosphorus, muck and low depth, urged county help for dredging or a county‑chartered lake manager, and said prior grant thresholds and costs have blocked action.

Local volunteers are sounding the alarm as Silver Lake’s recreational charm fades, with urgent calls for county support to combat rising muck and toxic algae threats.

Rotary Club of Jinja launches 4th Run for the Nile to raise sh550 million for environmental conservation The Rotary Club of Jinja has officially launched the fourth edition of the Run for the Nile, an annual event aimed at mobilising resources and raising awareness to address environmental degradation in the Nile Basin. The event, scheduled for March 28 in Jinja, was unveiled at Platinum Credit Offices in Kampala. Speaking at the launch, Rotary Club of Jinja president Tomson Ofwono emphasized the growing threat posed by urban expansion, industrial growth, and pollution to communities living along the Nile and Lake Victoria. He noted that proceeds from the run will support environmental protection initiatives, including tree planting, community clean-up campaigns, conservation education, and the installation of gates to prevent plastic waste from entering the Nile. The initiative seeks to raise sh550 million this year to plant and maintain trees on 250 acres of land provided by the National Forest Authority. The forest will be maintained for at least three years to ensure sustainability. Participants will compete in 21km, 10km, and 5km race categories, with running kits available for sh30,000 at Platinum Credit branches and Rotary Clubs. Rotarian Geofrey Kitakule called on corporate organizations and individuals to support the cause, highlighting the health risks faced by communities that rely on untreated water from Lake Victoria and the Nile. Sponsors of the event include Nile Breweries, Platinum Credit, Maad McCann, Buganda Kingdom, the Ministry of Water, AAR Insurance, and the Auditor General's office. Organisers also encouraged participants to contribute toward maintaining specific acres of the forest as part of long-term conservation efforts.
