Climate-driven wildfires are becoming a major and immediate threat to species and biodiversity The study published in Nature finds that wildfire activities are expected to increase substantially across most regions by the end of this century, particularly in terms of burned areas and seasonal length. Increase in wildfire frequency and intensity will, in turn, increase the vulnerability of biodiversity and species in already vulnerable regions. Climate Change Impacts Are Pushing Species Beyond Their Tolerance Limits Climate change threatens species through two main pathways, according to the study. First, risks are imposed by gradual climatic shifts, including warming, changed precipitation patterns, and sea-level rise. These changes cause habitat loss and reduced suitability, pushing species beyond their physiological tolerance limits. Second, severe climate disturbance—including wildfires, heatwaves, and storms—are becoming increasingly frequent and are causing immediate and widespread mortality. According to the study, increases in the frequency and severity of wildfires are significant, and 15% of threatened species worldwide are already affected by changes in wildfire patterns. The study shows that future wildfire exposure will significantly increase for 9,592 non-marine species already threatened by more frequent or intense wildfires. Global burned areas are expected to rise by 9.3%, with about 84% of these vulnerable species facing higher risk, and around 40% of species in South America...

Tree species discovered in Panama is already at risk of extinction Scientists have named a tree from one Panamanian mountainside as a new species and classified it as critically endangered. The sequence of discovery followed immediately by decline shows the species has been disappearing faster than scientists could formally recognize it. Discovery on a lone mountainside On Cerro Colorado in western Panama, plant collections curated nearly 25 years apart kept pointing to one overlooked tree. While analyzing the specimens, Jorge Aranda at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) recognized a species that had not yet been described. When Aranda’s team returned for more material, the population looked far thinner than the early collections had suggested. The apparent decline turned a naming exercise into a conservation story before the ink was dry. Unique clues in leaves and fruit What set the tree apart was size. Its leaves measured only about 0.4 to 1.5 inches long. Compared with close relatives, its flowers carried fewer pollen-bearing parts and its fruit bore a different shape. The official listing shows that Clusia nanophylla was formally published on December 6, 2025, and its name refers to its unusually small leaves. Because formal names unlock databases, maps, and legal attention, getting this identity right mattered for reasons beyond...

If we don't meet #human #rights, and create #thriving, that is utter failure. That is a #species that has no right to exist because they have shit all over the gift they have been given. Right, like so if #suicide #by #nuclear #weapons is what we're going to choose can we speed up the process?

Could there ever be a new species of human? While it’s certainly a possibility, it’s very, very unlikely we’ll witness a new species of human evolve in the near future. This is primarily because we’re globally connected in a way that our ancestors never were – but it could happen one day... Unlike those that came before us, modern humans can - quite literally - move mountains to ensure populations don’t become geographically isolated. Is the human race truly one species or the lovechild of various prehistoric hook-ups? Just how interbred are we? What's the difference between humans and apes? And when did we first appear? There are, of course, geographically isolated groups of humans alive today; for example, the indigenous tribe that inhabits North Sentinel Island. There are also examples from history where groups have been isolated for thousands of years, such as the Aboriginal Australians who migrated to Australia roughly 50,000 years ago and remained largely separated from the rest of the world until the 17th century. How many species of human have there been? 5 ancient human species that lived BEFORE us: Meet the prehistoric pioneers who changed history forever It turns out we aren't as unique as we think we are: Here are 5 ancient...

Bottom trawling is catching thousands of fish species, including many at risk Bottom trawling has a reputation as one of the ocean’s bluntest tools: a heavy net dragged across the seafloor, scooping up whatever lives there and often leaving damaged habitat behind. But for all the attention it gets, there’s been a surprisingly basic gap in the conversation: exactly how many fish species are being caught. A new study from researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) tries to answer that question – and the number is bigger than most people would guess. Thousands of species caught Using more than 9,000 records of fish species reported in bottom trawls from 1895 to 2021, the team found over 3,000 fish species have been recorded in bottom trawl catches worldwide. And that’s likely an undercount: their estimates suggest the true number could be nearly double. Study first author Sarah Foster is a senior researcher and program leader at UBC’s Project Seahorse. “This is the clearest picture we’ve had of the breadth of bottom trawling. It reveals just how many species are being caught, and how much we have been missing,” said Foster. Bottom trawling is hard on biodiversity Bottom trawling isn’t like hooking a few target species on a line. It’s closer to...

Save This Species: Bull Kelp Bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) Conservation status: The IUCN Red List has not yet assessed this species, but state agencies, NOAA, nongovernmental organizations, and underwater survey groups such as ReefCheck consider bull kelp to be highly vulnerable, particularly in Northern California, Oregon, and the Salish Sea in Washington State and Canada. Description: Bull kelp is an annual species of marine algae that resides in temperate (cold) ocean waters and can grow up to 60 feet in one season, accumulating biomass via photosynthesis faster than most other organisms on Earth. It has a small holdfast attaching it to a rocky bottom, and a long, singular stipe (stem) that ends in a gas-filled bladder holding a profusion of golden blades up toward the surface. It tends to live in nearshore waters up to 60 feet deep, where sunlight penetrates to the ocean floor and there is a ready supply of ocean nutrients, resupplied either by wave action, or current flowing through channels. A tiny bull kelp starts its growth in early spring on the ocean floor, and by mid-summer a massive, surface-topping bull kelp produces spores in specialized patches called sori, which eventually drop away to the ocean floor to start the process...

Commentary: 'God Squad' putting some species on brink of extinction Pope Francis wrote in “Laudato Si’,” his encyclical about humankind’s relationship with the natural world, “We must forcefully reject the notion that our being created in God’s image and given dominion over the earth justifies absolute domination over other creatures.” I wonder if members of the Endangered Species Committee have read the pope’s landmark document. The committee met March 31 to unanimously approve an exemption for the oil and gas industry to drill in the Gulf and knowingly placed the critically endangered Rice’s whale (and other species) at grave risk of extinction. It is because of fateful decisions like this that the committee is often referred to as the God Squad. “In our time, the Church does not simply state that other creatures are completely subordinated to the good of human beings, as if they have no worth in themselves,” Pope Francis taught. Yet this is what the God Squad did. Until it met, the Endangered Species Act required all federal agencies to ensure activities in the Gulf were not likely to jeopardize the continued existence of endangered species or destroy or adversely modify habitats critical to their survival. The committee — composed of the secretaries of the Interior and...

Giant otters, river sentinels, now listed as threatened migratory species With evidence that the giant river otter is in an increasingly perilous state, delegates to the United Nations Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) listed it as an animal requiring urgent conservation action at its March 2026 meeting in Campo Grande, Brazil. The giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), endemic to tropical river systems in South America, once lived east of the Andes mountains from northern Venezuela to Argentina, a territory covering 9,021,590 square kilometers (3,483,255 square miles). The proposal advocating for stronger protection, submitted by France, noted that it was listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2021, though it is extinct in Uruguay and Argentina, is critically endangered in Paraguay and Ecuador and vulnerable in Brazil. The same document mentions a 50% decline in the giant otter population over the last 25 years. Individuals’ size has also been reduced, indicating a decrease in pups’ survival rates. Using climate projections such as reduced rainfall due to climate change, specialists point out that the downward trend in the species’ population will continue for a few decades. Illegal hunting for their fur wiped them out in large parts of their range; many populations never recovered, according to a 2025...

Magic mushrooms: new African species sheds light on the history of the famous fungus “Magic mushrooms” are consumed recreationally and for medicinal purposes around the world. These fungi gained their fame as “magic” because they produce chemical compounds (called psilocybin and psilocin) which have psychedelic effects. The most famous species of these mushrooms, due to their global distribution and ease of cultivation, is Psilocybe cubensis, known primarily from its preferred habitat of dung-laden fields. It was first described from Cuba, but is found throughout the world. However, there has been a long-standing question about its evolutionary history. Where did it originate, and how did it move around the globe? We described a new species of magic mushroom in South Africa and Zimbabwe, now named Psilocybe ochraceocentrata, which has allowed us to investigate this question. Our disciplines are mycology (the study of fungi) and evolutionary biology. In a recent paper, we report on what P. ochraceocentrata may tell us about the possible wild origins of Psilocybe cubensis. Our findings used sophisticated methods to test whether P. cubensis could have arrived in the Americas along with European colonisation and cattle, a long standing hypothesis proposed by the Mexican mycologist and ethnomycologist Gastón Guzmán. We also investigated other possible scenarios, such as dispersal by environmental factors like...

Deadly mushroom species is evolving in the US, producing completely new chemical toxins Scientists have discovered that invasive death cap mushrooms in the United States are producing entirely new chemical compounds not found in their native European populations. This shift reveals that a lethal species is not just spreading geographically but changing its biological behavior in ways that could reshape both ecosystems and risks to human health. Death cap mushroom evolution In California death cap mushroom specimens, researchers found several small compounds that European death caps did not appear to produce. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) campus, Sung Chul Park, a postdoctoral natural product chemist, linked those compounds to active genes. That connection showed the invasion had changed the mushroom’s chemistry, not merely widened the territory where people keep finding it. The finding pushed the story beyond where the mushroom grows and toward changes that may help it persist in forests. Across western forests Death cap mushrooms, Amanita phalloides, likely arrived in North America on tree roots, then spread along the West Coast after the 1930s. California populations paired mostly with oaks, especially coast live oak, which feeds the fungus sugars in exchange for soil nutrients. Earlier field work found western mushrooms grew about twice as large and kept fruiting across a...

Emperor penguin and Antarctic fur seal now Endangered due to climate change – IUCN Red List Gland, Switzerland, 9 April 2026 (IUCN) – The emperor penguin and Antarctic fur seal are now both Endangered, according to The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. Climate change in Antarctica is leading to changes in sea-ice that are projected to cause the emperor penguin population to halve by the 2080s, while reduced food availability has already driven a 50% reduction in the Antarctic fur seal population since 2000. The southern elephant seal is also now at risk of extinction, due to disease.
