Conceptual framework for relating spillover rate and the past spillover window to host jump risk. In order to successfully host jump, a pathogen must overcome barriers to spillover and barriers to sustained transmission in the novel host. Pathogens may or may not be limited at either step in this process, leading conceptually to four classes of nonnative pathogens (A–D). In practice, and in the authors' model, spillover limitation and transmission limitation are continuous traits meaning that there is no discrete separation between the “types” of pathogens shown in A–D but thy discuss pathogens in this framework because it is useful for illustration.

Pathogen host-jumps pose major risks to health, but how can we predict them? This study shows that #pathogen novelty, rather than #spillover rate, is a stronger predictor of host-jump risk, so we should monitor emerging pathogens with limited spillover histories @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4ss5WCY

While pre-existing immunity may offer partial cross-protection, the virus has not yet achieved efficient human-to-human transmission. However, key biological components for this shift are already partially in place.

Together, these studies show that H5N1 risk emerges from migratory dynamics, landscape structure, production intensification, and surveillance gaps. Systems based only on clinical notification react too late to prevent spillover.

Overall, H5N1 risk lies not only in human-to-human transmission, but in the convergence of high pathogenicity, subtle molecular adaptation, diagnostic gaps, and expanding host range.

Steve's review of Spillover 5/5: I loved this book. The pacing is great and I couldn’t put the book down. The tone is conversational and friendly, with the occasional well-placed levity. David Quammen was very good at explaining the science involved and in staying out of the weeds.I also loved the way Quammen incorporated his own journey in the book. I found the writing to be elegant at the same time as being highly comprehensible. I enjoyed the biographical information, the author’s journey, and the very useful maps. Overall this was a great read.

Great science writing. www.goodreads.com/review/show/... #Spillover #DavidQuammen @quammen.bsky.social @wwnorton.com
