Emperor penguin and Antarctic fur seal now Endangered due to climate change – IUCN Red List Gland, Switzerland, 9 April 2026 (IUCN) – The emperor penguin and Antarctic fur seal are now both Endangered, according to The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. Climate change in Antarctica is leading to changes in sea-ice that are projected to cause the emperor penguin population to halve by the 2080s, while reduced food availability has already driven a 50% reduction in the Antarctic fur seal population since 2000. The southern elephant seal is also now at risk of extinction, due to disease.

Emperor penguins and fur seals now Endangered as climate change reshapes Antarctica, IUCN Red List finds Emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) and Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) have been uplisted to Endangered category, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. The IUCN has cited climate change in Antarctica as the primary driver, resulting in changes to sea ice that are projected to halve emperor penguin populations by the 2080s. “While reduced food availability has already driven a 50 per cent reduction in the Antarctic fur seal population since 2000, the southern elephant seal is also now at risk of extinction due to disease,” it said in a statement. Sea-ice loss threatens emperor penguins Emperor penguins were previously listed as Near Threatened (NT), and scientists had called for stronger protection by elevating their status. In 2022, they were listed as Threatened under the United States’ Endangered Species Act of 1973. Satellite imagery indicates a loss of around 10 per cent of the population between 2009 and 2018 alone, equating to more than 20,000 adult penguins, the IUCN said. “The primary driver is the early break-up and loss of sea ice, which has reached record lows since 2016. Emperor penguins require fast ice — sea ice that is ‘fastened’ to the...

Emperor penguin and Antarctic fur seal now Endangered due to climate change - IUCN Red List “These important findings should spur us into action across all sectors and levels of society to decisively address climate change. The declines of the emperor penguin and Antarctic fur seal on the IUCN Red List are a wake-up call on the realities of climate change. As countries prepare to gather at the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting in May, these assessments provide essential data to inform decisions regarding this majestic continent and its awe-inspiring wildlife. Antarctica’s role as our planet’s “frozen guardian” is irreplaceable – offering untold benefits to humans, stabilising the climate and providing refuge to unique wildlife,” said Dr Grethel Aguilar, IUCN Director General. “Penguins are already among the most threatened birds on Earth. The emperor penguin’s move to Endangered is a stark warning: climate change is accelerating the extinction crisis before our eyes. Governments must act now to urgently decarbonise our economies,” said Martin Harper, CEO of BirdLife International, which coordinated the emperor penguin assessment as the authority for birds on the IUCN Red List. The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) has moved from Near Threatened to Endangered on the IUCN Red List, based on projections that its population will halve by the 2080s. Emperor penguins listed as endangered species: IUCN Its change of status from "near threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) underscores the existential threat for ice-dependent species as global warming profoundly reshapes the frozen continent. Emperor penguins rely on sea ice to live, hunt and breed. The early break-up and loss of these platforms of frozen ocean water has caused a plummet in their numbers. The IUCN – a global network of scientists, governments and conservation groups – said changes in sea ice caused by climate change were expected to halve the emperor penguin population by the 2080s. They "concluded that human-induced climate change poses the most significant threat to emperor penguins", Philip Trathan, part of the IUCN expert group who worked on the Red List assessment, said in a statement. The Red List of Threatened Species is maintained by the IUCN and is the world's most comprehensive information source on the extinction status of plants, animals and fungi. There are six classifications from "least concern" to "extinct". Those ranked as "endangered" are two steps below "extinction in the wild", which denotes a species surviving only in captivity and not in nature. The Antarctic fur seal – once hunted to near extinction by humans...

Model Forests as Exemplars of Resilience: How IUCN and the IMFN are collaborating to support community-managed landscapes Model Forests are integrated landscapes that prioritise forest conservation and restoration alongside the social, economic and environmental goals of local communities. These 'living laboratories' focus on a community-based approach to sustainable forest management, including voices across public and private sectors, community and government organisations, and research institutions alike. All Model Forests adhere to six key principles, specifically stakeholder partnerships, landscape level management, commitment to sustainability, participatory governance, a defined programme of activities, and promotion of knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and networking. The International Model Forest Network (IMFN) is the global platform comprised of the world’s Model Forests and their regional networks. IUCN and the IMFN began collaborating in 2024 through Canada’s Global Forest Leadership Program and the IMFN Climate Initiative. In particular, the IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team has worked with IUCN Regional Offices in South America, Asia, and Africa to achieve three major objectives in support of Model Forests. The project has aimed to: Bring tools and approaches to enhance Model Forest experiences and impacts on restoration target-setting, planning, delivery and monitoring. Enrich forest and landscape restoration efforts through gender-responsive approaches and guidance. Enhance visibility and amplify impact through expertise sharing and ramping up the visibility of Model Forests’ efforts globally...

'Nature is essential to our economy, our stability, our humanity': IUCN President tells ChangeNOW Summit Speaking to an audience of global leaders from business, finance, science, and civil society, she emphasised the urgency of addressing interconnected environmental crises, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation, as these challenges continue to accelerate amid global uncertainty and geopolitical challenges. In her address, President Al Mubarak stressed that nature underpins all economic systems, urging leaders to rethink how it is valued. She said: “It is especially in moments like this that we see clearly that nature, energy, society, and finance are not separate conversations. They are deeply interconnected. “Yet too often, they are not aligned in our attention, not aligned in our investment, and not aligned in our actions. “The reality is that nature cannot be separated from human systems. It is affected by all that I have just mentioned. Energy sources, markets, financial systems, supply chains, economies, and movements are all interconnected. “And the results of our choices are visible in the loss of ecosystems and the pressures we place on the natural world. But we also have the opportunity to rethink these systems, to redesign them in ways that serve both nature and people. “It is time to recognise that nature is essential to our...

IUCN and the African Model Forest Network (AMFN) build capacity in Africa's community-managed forests The African Model Forest Week took place in Mbalmayo, Cameroon, from 24-26 February, 2026. The IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team and the IUCN Cameroon Country Office were co-organisers of the week’s workshop, alongside critical regional partners, namely the African Model Forest Network (known in the region as le Réseau Africain de Forêts Modèles, or RAFM), Université Laval, and the Network of Forestry and Environmental Training Institutions in Central Africa (known in the region as le Reseau des Institutions de Formation Forestière et Environnementale en Afrique Centrale, or RIFFEAC). Broadly, support for this workshop came from the International Model Forest Network (IMFN). The IMFN is a global network which brings together over 60 Model Forests from across more than 30 countries. Model Forests are forest landscapes where communities and stakeholders cooperatively govern and conserve their ecosystems, allowing social, environmental, economic and cultural benefits and trade-offs to be considered equally within the unique context of each Model Forest. The AMFN is the regional network which encompasses sub-Saharan Africa and its Model Forests, acting as a bridge between Africa’s individual Model Forests and the wider IMFN, while also providing a regional coordination role. Sub-Saharan Africa currently contains two officially recognised Model Forests—namely Dja...

IUCN highlights the role of wetlands and international cooperation at the opening of CMS COP15 At the beginning of his intervention, Gabriel Quijandría emphasised the symbolic significance of the conference venue, near the Pantanal, one of the most important ecosystems on the planet for biodiversity. He then highlighted the central role of wetlands in global ecological connectivity: “Wetlands are essential natural infrastructure for migratory species and for people. Migratory species depend on networks of habitats along international routes, which in many cases include extensive and highly significant wetlands. Wetlands are crucial nodes in this connectivity.” The Director also drew attention to the vulnerability of these ecosystems, often underestimated in comparison with other habitats, despite their ecological and socioeconomic relevance: “These ecosystems, by ensuring water supply for human needs, reducing disaster risk, and supporting agricultural production and fisheries, sustain not only millions of people in rural areas and fishing communities, but also major urban areas located far away.” Another key point of his intervention was the need to strengthen mechanisms for cooperation among countries and institutions, articulating different levels of governance to ensure the effective conservation of migratory species and their habitats: “To strengthen the protection of these ecosystems and the associated migratory species, it is essential to promote inter-institutional and international cooperation and to consider...
