A great blue heron fishes at sunset in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal black-and-white photograph, the heron appears partially silhouetted and perfectly reflected as it leans over the pond, poised to spear a fish beneath an arched log. This environmental composition reveals the broader scene: still water mirroring trees along the opposite shore and the curved log that emerges at center-left before dipping back beneath the surface at mid-frame on the right. The symmetry of the log and its reflection, combined with the heron’s form, creates the illusion of a face when viewed to the left—some even see a resemblance to the Grinch from Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

A great blue heron preens in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, the heron perches on a log in right-side profile. Its neck is extended and its head tilted, allowing its beak to reach its chest plumage. The head feathers lift and curl in unison, echoing one another above its crown. The background is softly blurred vegetation from the opposite shore, with hints of beige, green, and earthy tones, along with a strip of rocky shoreline and water along the bottom of the frame. The scene feels serene and quietly beautiful.

Half a day birding at the Sangganhe wetlands in Shanxi late March 2026 Ken Sng is an occasional birder based in Singapore. In recent years, he has included birding on his overseas travels. If you are visiting Singapore and need some tips on birding places, feel free to reach out. I had the opportunity to visit Datong in Shanxi in late March with my wife and her friend from Shanghai. As I had a day to myself, I looked up the Internet for a place to do some birding not too far from Datong. I found the Sangganhe National Wetland Park and decided to hire a car to get there on Sunday, 29 Mar. The drive from Datong city takes about an hour and is itself quite interesting as it will bring you through corn farms and farming villages. Scenes quite different than those you will find in Datong city. Alas, the park was closed. The visitor centre was empty, and the lone chap we found there told us we couldn’t proceed beyond the barrier and that he had no idea when it would reopen. This is a screenshot from Google Maps of the area I was in. For reference, the Wetland Park visitor centre is at the bottom of the map. This...

Healthy Illinois Wetlands Support a Healthier Mississippi River Illinois lawmakers have an opportunity to reduce flood risk, protect water quality, and conserve essential wildlife habitat by restoring and protecting wetlands. Many wetlands in Illinois have been lost over the years, affecting the birds and communities that rely on them. The Wetlands Protections Act would create a comprehensive state permitting program that, except for exempt actions like normal farming activities, would require permission prior to modifying or filling wetlands. This would help avoid impacts to the 72% of Illinois’s 981,000 acres of remaining wetlands that are at risk of development or drainage. The state would be compensated for any impacts that are unavoidable; those funds could then be used for future restoration activities. Passage of the Wetlands Protection Act could be part of a broader effort to increase state wetland protections and restoration efforts. For example, in Wisconsin, the state legislature authorized a demonstration project to test natural flood risk reduction practices, such as wetland restoration projects, to mitigate flood impacts in flood-prone areas of Ashland County, WI. The project proved to be so successful that the Wisconsin legislature followed it up with the creation of a Pre-Disaster Flood Resilience Grant Program. Illinois could follow the same formula to...

5 Reasons to Protect Illinois Wetlands Wetlands are an essential ecosystem for communities and wildlife across Illinois. Protecting them is more important than ever. SHARE By David McEllis, Illinois Legislative Director Wetlands protect our communities. They soak up floodwaters, saving homes from damage. They recharge groundwater and filter drinking water to block pollution. They store carbon and provide habitat for rich wildlife across Illinois. However, recent attacks on wetlands protections put this essential ecosystem more at risk than ever. Tell Your IL Lawmakers to Save Wetlands Here are five reasons protecting Illinois’ wetlands is more important than ever: Federal Rollbacks Have Left Many Illinois Wetlands Unprotected In 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court severely curtailed the waterways covered under the federal Clean Water Act. Now the Trump administration is trying to roll back other important federal standards and protections too. Other Midwestern states had state wetlands laws they could fall back on, but Illinois does not have a standalone state wetlands program. Many wetlands that were previously protected are now vulnerable to development, so it’s time for Illinois to step up. Wetlands are Home to Many of Illinois’ Most Beloved Wildlife Wetlands are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems in Illinois. They provide habitat for birds, fish,...

BMW Brilliance expands wetland conservation efforts in Northeast China Sino-German joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive has launched two new initiatives to support wetland conservation in Liaoning province, extending its environmental footprint in Northeast China. The latest moves, unveiled last week, include a donation to Liaozhong Puhe National Wetland Park in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning, and continued backing for the Liaohekou National Nature Reserve in Panjin, marking the fifth consecutive year of support for the coastal wetland. The projects reflect the carmaker's long-standing "In China, for China, with China" approach and its parallel focus on economic and ecological development in Liaoning. The initiatives build on the BMW Beautiful Homeland program, introduced in 2021, under which BMW Brilliance has concentrated on biodiversity protection at Liaohekou, a temperate coastal wetland of global ecological significance. At Liaozhong Puhe National Wetland Park, a mixed ecosystem of rivers, marshes and constructed wetlands, the carmaker is working with the China Green Foundation to implement restoration and public engagement measures. These include replanting native aquatic vegetation such as reeds and lotus to rehabilitate water systems, rolling out environmental education programs for local communities, and promoting co-governance mechanisms to integrate conservation into everyday life. Meanwhile, at Liaohekou National Nature Reserve, BMW Brilliance will continue to focus on water...

Which Wetland Design Stores the Most Carbon? Pilot Study Has an Answer Newswise — Wastewater treatment is increasingly under pressure to deliver cleaner effluent with lower energy use and fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Constructed wetlands have drawn attention because they rely on ecological processes such as filtration, microbial transformation, and plant uptake rather than energy-intensive machinery. Yet the climate role of these systems has remained debated. Different wetland configurations can alter oxygen conditions, microbial communities, plant growth, and therefore emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. Earlier studies often focused on only one or two gases or ignored indirect emissions such as electricity consumption, making it difficult to judge whether wetlands are overall carbon sources or carbon sinks. Based on these challenges, in-depth research was needed on how wetland configuration shapes full-year carbon performance. Researchers from Chongqing University, China, reported (DOI: 10.1007/s11783-026-2158-0) on January 20, 2026 in ENGINEERING Environment that three pilot-scale constructed wetland configurations—free-water surface flow, horizontal subsurface flow, and vertical subsurface flow—showed distinct trade-offs in pollutant removal and greenhouse gas emissions, but all ultimately functioned as annual net carbon sinks. To compare configurations under controlled conditions, the team built three outdoor pilot-scale wetlands with identical dimensions and planted them with Phragmites australis. The systems were operated continuously for twelve...

How Cryptocurrency Mining Could Threaten South America's Wetlands and Dry Forests Nearly 4,400 miles separate Washington, D.C., from South America. Yet a regulatory decision made in the U.S. capital could have unexpected consequences for distant ecosystems across the neighboring continent. The GENIUS Act, signed by Donald Trump in July 2025, requires stablecoins — a type of cryptocurrency — to be backed by U.S. dollars or Treasury securities, giving formal structure to a market that has grown with little oversight. As cryptocurrency becomes more integrated into the global financial system, its environmental footprint may increasingly be felt far from Wall Street — in this case, in the rivers, forests, and wetlands of South America. The problem, experts say, is that the measure strengthens demand for cryptocurrencies and data centers, which require enormous amounts of electricity and indirectly increases the search for cheap energy in countries like Brazil and Paraguay. In these places digital mining operations to produce cryptocurrencies are already beginning to put pressure on electricity systems and intensify debates about expanding energy infrastructure in environmentally sensitive regions such as the Pantanal and the Gran Chaco. These two biomes are among the most important reservoirs of biodiversity on the planet. The Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland, spans parts of Brazil, Bolivia,...

Audubon and Partners Announce Start of Wetland Enhancement Work at Lakeview Wildlife Management Area (March 31, 2026) New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Amanda Lefton the National Audubon Society, and Ducks Unlimited (DU) today announced the start of construction on a 50-acre wetland enhancement project in the Lakeview Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The project in the town of Ellisburg, Jefferson County will improve spawning and nursery habitat for fish such as northern pike, as well as new breeding habitat for waterfowl and declining bird species like Sora and the State-endangered Black Tern. Additionally, the work will enhance recreational opportunities in the WMA, including waterfowl hunting, bird watching, fishing, and kayaking. "Through strategic channeling and habitat restoration at Lakeview Wildlife Management Area, DEC, Audubon, and Ducks Unlimited are restoring natural hydrology, improving spawning habitats for fish, and creating diverse breeding areas for marsh birds and waterfowl,” said Commissioner Lefton. "This work demonstrates how restoring ecosystems can expand opportunities for New Yorkers to enjoy the outdoors, and connects to Governor Hochul's 'Get Offline, Get Outside" campaign designed to improve mental and physical health by encouraging New Yorkers to step away from their screens in favor of outside activities." The 3,461-acre WMA along the eastern shoreline of Lake Ontario is part of the largest...
