A tiny bird with an emerald-green back and light underparts is hovering near some Red Bee Balm in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. This is a Ruby-throated Hummingbird, the only hummingbird species breeding in the Adirondacks. They arrive in mid-May and depart by early fall. They are vital pollinators, feeding on nectar from tubular flowers.
