The image shows a large orange and black butterfly nectaring on a white and yellow flower. This is a Monarch. It is probably the best known of all migratory butterflies, migrating from overwintering sites in the south to its northern home in the spring and back again in the fall. Most Monarchs seen during the summer in the Adirondack Mountains and in the rest of eastern and central North America are part of a migratory process that ends in Mexico. However, no single individual makes the round-trip journey. The migration process involves several Monarch generations.

A yellow and brownish bird with a nice neat chestnut cap is sitting on a branch in a bog in the Adirondack Mountains for upstate New York. This is a Palm Warbler. Palm Warblers breed in boreal forests, with an estimated 98% breeding in Canada. Palm Warblers also breed in the Adirondack Mountains. They breed in bogs and open boreal coniferous forests with scattered evergreen trees, usually near water. The Palm Warbler is one of the first warblers to arrive in the Adirondacks in the spring and one of the latest to leave our region in the fall.

Ring-necked Ducks are among the boreal birds who make their homes on marshland. These ducks winter inland along the Gulf of Mexico and southern Atlantic coasts. They depart from their wintering sites in February and can usually be found throughout the Adirondacks from mid- to late April on.

A stunning yellow bird with chestnut stripes on his breast is perched on some vegetation in a wetland. This is a male Yellow Warbler. I photographed this bird in mid-June at Cemetery Road Wetlands, which is a marsh in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The Yellow Warbler is a long-distance migrant that spends its winter in Central America and northern South America. It begins arriving in our area in late April; most will have left by the end of September.

A lovely blue bird is perched on the top branch of an apple tree in bloom. This is the Indigo Bunting, a species sometimes nicknamed "blue canaries," because these birds sing from dawn to dusk, often atop the tallest perch they can find. These favored singing sites are maintained throughout the breeding season and often from year to year, so a birder intent on capturing Indigo Bunting songs can listen for the birds singing from the same perch for many years.

Birds that breed every summer on the property include Magnolia Warbler, Swainson’s Thrush, Hermit Thrush, Winter Wren, Blackburnian Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and Ovenbird.

The image shows a small brown bird with a bit of yellow on the throat and white wing bars. This is an American Goldfinch, a small finch that we see year-round here in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The American Goldfinch diet is dominated by seeds, including those from thistle, sunflowers, asters, grasses, and trees. It generally forages while perched on the plant and will hang upside down from branches or thistle heads to reach seeds. American Goldfinches readily come to winter feeders, where they are sometimes seen of flocks of 200 or more. They come to most kinds of feeders (including hopper, platform, and hanging feeders) and are also seen feeding on the ground below feeders.

This is a scenic photo of some red and orange fall foliage reflected in Heart Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The Heart Lake Trail is one of the best places in the Adirondacks to learn about nature in the mountains. It provides both beautiful views of a pristine mountain lake and access to varied habitats. Much of the trail follows the lake shore and passes through mixed forest, with some marshy areas close to the shore, where marsh-dwelling plants such as Labrador Tea and Sheep Laurel may be found. The lake is also a good place to look for Common Loons and Great Blue Herons.

A gray and white bird with a black band encircling its yellow bill is perched on a rock near the banks of Lake Champlain in the Adirondack Park in upstate New York. The Champlain Valley is a center for cold-weather birding in the Adirondack Park. Lake Champlain remains open for much of the winter, so it attracts a large number of ducks and other aquatic birds that had abandoned their breeding territories in the Adirondack interior earlier in the fall. The Ring-billed Gull is a partial, mid- to long-distance migrant. Most individuals depart their breeding regions in late summer and early fall to winter in warmer areas. As lakes freeze over in the Adirondack interior, these gulls (which are frequently seen throughout the Adirondacks during the warmer months) gradually disappear in search of open water.

An olive-green and white bird with a red iris and gray crown is perched on a branch singing. The image shows a fairly large rock on the edge of a trail in the Adirondack Mountains upstate New York. It’s a glacial erratic. Glacial erratics are the stones and rocks that a glacier picked up as it advanced and then left behind as it melted. Glacial erratics can be carried for hundreds of miles and may differ significantly from the rocks native to the area in which it rests. The term "erratic" comes from the Latin "errare," which means "to go astray." Glacial erratics can be seen along many trails throughout the Adirondacks

Two pink flowers are blooming in a forest. The plants are Pink Lady’s Slippers. Pink Lady's Slipper (Cypripedium acaule Aiton) is a large, showy wildflower belonging to the orchid family. It blooms in the Adirondacks from late May to late June. Pink Lady's Slippers are found from Saskatchewan to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia; south to South Carolina and Georgia; west to Alabama and Tennessee; and north to Minnesota. This plant is listed as endangered in Illinois and Tennessee and unusual in Georgia.

Pink Lady's Slipper grows in a variety of habitats. In the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, this plant can be found growing on well-drained sites, often under partial shade in conifer forests. Pink Lady's Slipper also grows under hardwoods and in Mixed Wood Forests. It is typically found in acidic soils. It can also be seen on the edges of swamps and bogs.

A small grey and white rodent is perched on a peanut feeder at night. This is a Northern Flying Squirrel, one of 53 mammalian species that make their home in the Adirondack Park of upstate New York. These little guys don’t have wings, but they can glide using a specialized fold of skin called a patagium. I caught flying squirrels fairly frequently on our trail cameras for three or four months several years ago, but haven’t seen one since. I suspect our resident foxes got them. Our squirrel and chipmunk populations have also declined, probably for the same reason.
